Time Shackles

A moment ago, I was a little girl.

Scared of grass and heights and

The monsters in the dark.

Painting watercolour flowers on the table cloth.

Dreaming of angels and

Praying for a pair of wings,

Hair wild and hands cold,

Unstoppable.

Just a second ago,

Five seconds, ten.

Half a minute and

Suddenly I'm being forced into a mold

Made for princesses and scientists,

Pretty girls with straight hair and curves

And- don’t you cause a fuss-

But the shooting stars are falling in my eyes

I’m blind.

There’s a spider in my room

Behind the bookshelf

Saying, “Grow up, kill me.

Do it, I dare you.”

Grow up, I double dog dare you-

And we all know there’s

No way out of that kind of bind.

The minutes tick like a time bomb.

In an instant I will be cold in a coffin

Hair grey and falling out,

And I will wonder where the time has gone.

This little girl will scream

And pound at the wooden walls

Until the grave diggers realize they've made a mistake

And let her out.

And then the shackles of time will fall away.
