"Von's dead."
I never expected those words to come out of my mother's mouth. I blinked slowly as if I were a dog trying to understand the 'sit' command. "What do you mean?"
"I mean," Mom replied, her teeth clenched, "he's dead."
"What?" I sputtered, staring at her in disbelief.
She sighed impatiently. "Von died in a car crash. Now get on with life, April. It's not like he meant all that much to you." With that, she spun on her heel and left the room, phone in hand. I continued to stand there, my mouth slightly open.
"He's," I whispered in agony to myself, "dead?"
