Dylan was shaking like a leaf as she tried to pull her hair up into a half up-half down pony. It was yet again another relocation to a new school where she had to be the new girl. She hated being the girl. The stares and awkward introductions made her want to throw up, but she was used to it. She had moved around so much throughout her life that it became normal to be new. It didn't mean she hated it any less though.Dylan's mom was in the army, which meant that she to relocate frequently. This was going to be the first time that Dylan was staying in place. Whether her mom had to move to a new base or not, Dylan would be staying in Trentworth, Kentucky. This was the place where her mom had grown up and remained the same place where her father and half sister resided. If anything should happen and her mom would be sent away, Dylan would have to move in with her father.
That was the most nerve wracking thing about this move. It was her parents' hometown. This is where they fell in love and if it hadn't been for her father's infidelity, it's most likely where Dylan would have had to grow up. But instead this is the place that will become home because her mom promised her no moving in her Senior year. It was a sweet sentiment, but Dylan preferred moving over having to actually forge friendships and get involved in school activities. She wasn't exactly a people person and she was terrified of what this year might be for her.
"Pickle, your dad is here to take you to school. Hurry up!" Dylan's mom yelled at the bottom of the staircase. She grimaced at the ugly nickname that she'd lived with for seventeen years now, but still made her way down the steps.
She grabbed an apple, kissing her mother's cheek as she passed her and made her way to the driveway where her father was waiting for her. In the back was her half sister, Scarlet.
She smiled, "Hi, daddy."
Dylan's relationship with her father was good despite the circumstances. He cheated on her mom when she was nearly seven months along with Dylan. In the event of his cheating, Dylan and Scarlet were only seven months apart from each other. Dylan's father quickly divorced her mom and not long after remarried to Scarlet's mother. The family ties were a little fucked, but it wasn't all that bad. She and Scarlet were close and she loved her father more than anything. Dylan only got to see her father and sister every few years. It really just depended on where her mom was stationed. The further away they were, the less they got to see each other.
"Hey, Dyl. You excited for your first day?" her sister asked in the backseat. Scarlet's blue eyes were divulged into her phone screen, but Dylan knew she was listening anyhow. Scarlet was a great multitasker.
Dylan sighed, sinking further into her seat, "If by excited you mean absolutely terrified, then sure."
Dylan's dad laid a hand on her shoulder for comfort, "Calm down, pickle. You'll do great. It's the last time you'll ever have to be the new girl. Embrace it. Scar can help you get comfortable too. Right, Scarlet?"
Scarlet hummed in agreement, "Yeah. You can even join glee club with me if you want. We all know you're a great singer. You'd fit in perfectly."
"I don't know joining any clubs on my first day, but I'll think about it."
After a few moments of silence, their father dropped off the Nelson girls at the front door. This would be the only time he'd ever drop them off. Scarlet had her own car. From this moment forward, she'd be taking them to school. Their dad only dropped them off today to ease Dylan in her first day at Trentworth.
Scarlet slid her phone into her back pocket and one of her wireless ear buds back in its case and in her purse. Noticing her sister's uneasy look, she placed her hands on Dylan's shoulders.
