Kenneth had never known his mother, he was told she was a wonderful witch but she had died bringing him into the world. So, Kenneth has already lost a parent before he could speak.
The next family member to go was his Father. At nine years old, Kenneth was made an orphan at the hands of some wizards who were frightened and angry enough to beat a man to death after hearing his name. At nine years old, Kenneth already knew that the world was a horrible place filled only with vicious people who could never accept him because of something his Grandfather (whom he had never even met) had done.
The young seer was then taken in by his eccentric (however-many-greats) Aunt Bathilda. They changed his name immediately, feeling no sorrow as he cut his ties with his Grandfather, and Kenneth Gustav Grindelwald became Kenneth Gustav Bagshot. Freedom was wonderful — Gellert Grindelwald was now nothing more than a stranger rotting in an Austrian prison, and at least his middle name was still a link to his Father — but of course his genes decided to screw him over too. It just so happens that the boy who hated his Grandfather, would be his mirror image. As if he wasn't already afraid of being like him...
