The next day brought more sunshine, and more confusion into Spongebob's world. The Mr. Krabs he had known for all his life had suddenly changed in his eyes completely. The dynamic of mortal enemies that had existed between Mr. Krabs and Plankton for years had now become blurry and complicated to him. It was the middle of the day, and the kitchen was flooded with the scent of cooking patties. He worked diligently with his treasured spatula, but his mind was in a completely different place. Would Karen leave Bikini Bottom for good? Would Plankton be angry with Mr. Krabs for ruining their relationship? With so many unanswered questions, it was difficult to stay focused. Spongebob knew that change was around the corner, but it was impossible to predict the details.
When Spongebob hung up his hat for the day, and headed out of the Krusty Krab into the cool air of the night, he was met with a sight that both answered his questions and confused him even further. There at the top of the driveway of the Chum Bucket, were Mr. Krabs and Plankton, slumped against each other for support, fast asleep. Empty boxes labelled "Karen's Things" were piled next to the front door, indicating her departure, and a stack of opened letters were strewn across the ground before them. The most telling visual were their two hands connected together and resting in their laps. The display of affection was jarring, and something about the situation made Spongebob uneasy, but he was sure he would grow to understand it. After all, love was a tricky thing.
