Off the southern coast of Taiwan sits Green Island, home to a penal colony for political prisoners during the White Terror, a 38-year period of martial law, during which numerous political dissidents were disappeared. Families were torn apart; some parents never even met their children. During the White Terror, Taiwanese people of all ages and classes died by firing squad for alleged anti-government intentions. The official policy of the era was. it was “better to kill one by mistake than to let one go in error.” It's said those who died during this time still haunt the island, where their ghosts can be heard and seen.
