The pounding wormed its way into Donna's head, the sound of her husband throwing himself at the door over and over. There was no way he could get in. The door was locked with a chair stuck under the handle for good measure. She had even shoved the desk in the way before retreating to the other side of the room.

"Don't make me force my way in there!" His voice sounded like gargled rocks. Donna tried desperately to block him out, her hands tightening over her ears. "Donna! Open the goddamn door!" This happened before. Often, he came home from work furious, wanting to take out his anger. He would slam the front door, grab a beer from the refrigerator, and find something to blame on her. If she was fast enough, she would be able to make it into the study before he managed to hit her. Fortunately, this was one of those times. The reason why hearing him try and break down the door was worse now? Because that door had taken such a beating that it was likely to break down any minute now. That, and the fact that she had killed him two days ago.
