ROMEO CARMICHAEL had been a rebel without a cause. He didn't have many friends growing up and the only time his parents would acknowledge him was when they were scolding him for getting into trouble.

The only person who remained a constant in his life was his closest friend, Neil Perry. The pair had been inseparable since kindergarten. Everything they did, they did together. Including getting into trouble, but Romeo always took full blame-he knew how Mr. Perry could get. It was Mr. Perry who gave the Carmichaels the "idea" of enrolling Romeo into a different boarding school than Neil.

The summer of 1954 was the last time Romeo Carmichael and Neil Perry had seen or talked to each other for years. It wasn't until their senior year that the boys met again. Seeing that he was doing well for himself now, Romeo's parents agreed to let him transfer to the prestigious boarding school, Welton Academy, for his final year. Being able to see each other again after what felt like an eternity of being separated invoked emotions and feelings in the two boys that they didn't know they had before.
