Ashley rolled her eyes, smiling small.
"Studying."
"Studying?"
"Yeah, studying." She repeated, placing down her pen for one of the first times in hours. Ashley flexed out her fingers, stiff from the stack of revision notes she had been scribbling onto crappily — her art skills weren't the best, okay? — cut out scraps of card stock, and rested her elbow against the table. With the palm of her hand, she formed a throne for her chin to sit. "I've got a bio test tomorrow. It makes ten percent of my grade," and I don't have Barb for a lab partner anymore so I don't understand anything.
"Usually when kids are up this late they're having fun."
"As opposed to...?"
"Studying their brains out for some lame test."
"It's ten percent!"
"So?"
"I don't think that's the sort of advice a father should be giving his daughter," Ashley's lips curled up at the corner, "A cop, no less."
