Kenji Shiba (red ranger): Kenji is the last surviving descendant of the Shiba clan and adopted grandson of Mako Shiba, whom of which was entrusted by the Shiba clan to train in the ways of the samurai in preparation for the eventual return of the Akuma clan. Kenji was cocky and arrogant at first, but he got a sudden change of character when his grandpa Mako died in his arms after his dojo was burned down by lord Ashura and his minions. his grandfather's last words were to go to his uncle Nobu's dojo in America, and Kenji stows away on a ferry to the US. there he is a fish out of water, having a hard time understanding our American customs. he has issues with teamwork, as he is used to working alone. he also has a dark secret (SPOILER ALERT- read the episode guide). was given a Battlizer by the ghost of his grandpa in the final arc.

Nigel Matthews (blue ranger): Nigel is a foreign exchange student from England, so he can relate to Kenji in being in a place he does not understand. coming from a wealthy family background, Nigel has developed a snooty, uptight, and vain personality (of which Oscar loves to poke fun at). he has a tendency to overcompensate, doing things in his spare time like fencing, archery, horseback riding, etc. as he feels that he needs to be the best at everything in order to earn the respect of his family. but Nigel discovers that friends are worth more than money upon becoming a ranger.

Oscar Hernandez (green ranger): Oscar is the class clown, always making a fool of himself every chance he gets. he likes playing pranks on his friends, especially the incredibly-humorless Nigel. those two have a sort of rivalry going on, due to their opposing personalities. Oscar loves bad puns and spouting one-liners during battle (much to the annoyance of his teammates, who constantly remind him to be serious when fighting monsters, but he never listens). he is also lazy and irresponsible, often sitting on the couch watching TV snacking on potato chips while the others are training, Nigel being the one that can handle his slacker attitude the least.
