Elizabeth sat at the table with her sister and her sister's friends, they were eating and joking, her sister served as the translator. It had been a while since she had been out but her sister begged her to go have dinner with her and her friends. She had initially refused but after she pestered her she finally agreed.

She decided to put on her new figure hugging sheer designer dress, her hair styled to the side and her sister completed the look with make-up and a ruby red lipstick. She looked beautiful, she felt beautiful. A young fella had approached her earlier but when he learnt that she was mute and deaf, he made an excuse about needing the bathroom. He had not returned and that was an hour ago. She decided not pay attention to that it was supposed to be a fun girls night and she chose to focus on that.

They were in a conversion when Elizabeth saw a sudden look of excitement take over her sister's friends faces. One them got up from her seat and began jumping up and down. Elizabeth furrowed her brows looking at her sister.

"They are playing the latest Jazz song and everyone wants to go to the dance floor". She signed and Elizabeth nodded watching them leave the table. She saw her sister say something to one of her friends before he nodded and went to the dance floor.

"Why don't you join your friends?". Elizabeth said to her sister and Lucy shook her head.

"I am fine". She signed back.

"Go have fun with your friends". Elizabeth replied. She didn't want Lucy not enjoy herself because of her.

"Are you sure?". Lucy asked and Elizabeth nodded.

"I insist". Elizabeth replied with a fake smile. Lucy sighed before nodding and getting up to her feet.

"I will be back". She mouthed as Elizabeth watched her lips move before nodding.

Lucy joined her friends on the dance floor and Elizabeth sat at the table, she was alone once again but it had been the same thing since she was six. She sat sipping her drink as she looked around watching young men and women of different races dancing. It was one of the few speakeasy's that was not racially segregated though the North was better off than the south when it came to race relations it still had its demons and most people chose to stick to their own kind, being in a place so integrated was unusual for her.

She jumped slightly when she felt someone's breath in her ear, she quickly turned around to look at the person. He was handsome that was for sure, his dark hair neatly combed and his brown suite complemented his olive skin tone, he was the first white man she found attractive. Her eyes went to his lips which were moving but she could not hear him. She furrowed her brows trying to read his lips.

"What's a beautiful lady doing here sitting alone". Vito repeated raising his voice slightly but the girl still gave him a confused look. He wondered what was wrong with her, he had spoken close to her ear and she still could not hear him and didn't say anything just gave him a confused look. He was about to speak again when he saw two women approaching the table.

"What's wrong with your friend, what is she deaf?". He asked one of the young women in a jokingly manner the alcohol clouding his sense.

"Yes and mute too, so you can take this is your cue to leave". She said harshly and he instantly regretted his words. He looked at the beautiful woman who still looked around confused, the other woman said something in sign language before grabbing her.

He was still inside a daze and didn't get the chance to apologize, he watched the young woman being dragged as she looked back at him with a confused look. He wondered if the other woman told her what he had said and cursed himself for not apologizing. He was usually never this brave to approach a beautiful woman but the alcohol was doing something to him, he rarely drank and when he did he didn't act like himself and it clearly backfired because he had just offended a woman that he was interested in.
