"He's coming."
Artie stood up and backed away, grabbing her knife again. Olivia backed against the nearest wall.
She opened her mouth and pressed on her gums with a wince. A small fang came out and Artie's adrenaline flowed.
"You're a vamp.""Wait a minute," She held up her hands when Artie took a step closer, "I've never fed on a human before."
Artie lowered her knife, it hung loosely in her hand, "That's why you didn't jump me the second I cut myself."
She nodded, then shook her head, "Listen, you've gotta get out of here. Me and my brother were a part of the pack that you—" she swallowed, "He's been tracking me and I know that if we don't hurry, he'll kill you and your friends. Or worse."
"Let's go then."
"What?"
"You said you've never fed, right?"
She nodded.
"Then you can stay that way. I could tell that when you told me you wanted to run away, you weren't lying.""I can't. I—"
Artie interrupted and grabbed Olivia's wrist, "Let's go."
She nodded and followed Artie as she ran out of the motel room.
The car stalled before the engine turned over. She wasn't sure why it was acting up now, but she almost interpreted it as a bad omen."Why is it that even after I've told you the truth, you still trust me?" Olivia was gazing out of the window, her leg bouncing up and down, "I could be lying."
"It wasn't a lie, Olivia. It was true."
"How do you know?"
Artie considered her words carefully, "Every night, I used to think about running away."
"And you didn't?"
She shook her head, "I replayed the scenario in my head so many times and I imagined saying your exact words."
"But you didn't leave."
"I have bigger problems to deal with than what I want."
Artie turned the steering wheel into a heavily wooded back road, the could night air clouded with fog.
"Artie, I have a bad feeling—"
As if on cue, the car engine started sputtering. She cursed under her breath as it slowed to a stop.
"We'd better start walking, I guess," Artie mused, opening the door for Olivia to get out. They walked for a few minutes, always checking behind them and listening back. There was a light reflecting off of something near the end of the road, which was getting thinner as they walked. Eventually, they came to a car that was parked across the road, blocking the way.
"Awesome." Olivia mumbled as Artie tugged on the door handle, seeing if it was locked.
A gunshot came from behind them and Artie pulled out her handgun, spinning around and aiming it at the intruder. They didn't need to know it wasn't loaded.
A figure stood in the shadows, their face obscured by darkness. Their arm was held in the air and their gun glittered with dew. Artie assumed they'd been hiding in the grass.
She looked to her left and saw nothing but a thick forest. No way out through there, especially with an armed follower. They wouldn't be able to make it over the car in time, and there was no way around it. To her right, there was a road, and it seemed to be their only chance.
Artie tapped Olivia's hand and tilted her head towards the road.
"On three."
"That's not my brother," Olivia stood, dumbfounded, staring at the figure.
"One,"
The figure took a step closer.
"Two,"
His face could barely be seen in the moonlight. It was almost familiar. Artie took Olivia's hand so she could guide her.
"Three."
They took off and the man barely had any time to register. The two girls ran side by side down the road, which was on a steep hill that was difficult to run down.
They failed to notice the dead end road sign.
They kept running, their feet hitting the earth so hard that they could feel the steps in their jaws and the cold air made their throats sore.
"Olivia," Artie said through heavy gasps of air, she wasn't used to running this much, "My gun isn't loaded."
"Where are we gonna go?"
They skidded to a halt as they saw the end of the road was a cliff perched over a small creek. Lights from a nearby rest stop twinkled in the distance and their breath clouded in front of them.
Footsteps pounded behind them and Artie's heart dropped as she turned around, gun ready to threaten but not fire, and saw who stood in front of her.
"Jackson?"
"What?" The voice called out as his face came into view.
"Jackson Brooks." She repeated, this time as a statement, "It's Artie. The girl who worked that hunt with your brother?"Olivia stood slightly behind Artie as Jackson crossed his arms.
"Oh, so now the girl who almost got my brother killed is working with vamps."
"She—" Artie looked around as she formulated both an escape plan and a lie. Only the latter came to her, "She's not a vampire."
"Bullshit." Jackson spat, "I saw her fangs."
"Artie, you have to jump." Olivia whispered from behind her, "Like, now."
"What? No, we can talk this out—Jackson, listen. Olivia hasn't fed yet. If she's lasted this long—"
He took a step closer and unsheathed his machete, "She's a monster."
"Artie. You have to do it now,"
"If she's a monster than you and me are monsters. We've both killed, and you know it."
He didn't reply and kept walking towards them. Artie turned to look below her, and as she turned back around, felt Olivia place her hands on her shoulders and push her back.
Time slowed as she heard Olivia scream and the blade slice through her neck. Artie blacked out before she could register the pain.
