Prime Numbers
- have exactly 2 factors, one (1) and itself (the number)Prime Factors
- prime numbers that we multiplyA. By Building a Factor Tree
1. Think of any 2 factors of 80.
Example: 4 x 202. Think of any 2 factors of 4 and then 80. Give prime numbers if you can.
3. Continue doing prime factorization until all the factors are prime numbers.
4. Get all the prime factors at the bottom and write them as the prime factorization of 80.
Prime Factorization of 80 = 2x2x2x2x5
B. By Continuous Division
1. Start with a prime divisor.
Example: 2 (80/2)2. If the quotient is not a prime, continue dividing by a prime divisor.
3. Keep dividing by a prime divisor until the last quotient is a prime number.
4. The prime factorization of 80 is the product of the prime divisors and quotient.
80 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 5
*Note
* All composite numbers can be expressed as a product of prime factors
* Prime Factorization is a way of expressing a composite numbers as a product of prime factors.©fummieeee
