Shattered sword

Evangeline

*the day before*

As I see a blue lightning in the sky I immediately know something is wrong. I fill with anger and look to Mare standing beside me expecting her hands to be pointed to the sky with an evil smile. Surprisingly I find her looking around with a confused and shocked appearance.

It wasn't her.

Maven and Iris keep walking towards the people with their guards as if nothing had happened. Do they not realize that we walk with the lighting girl? I don't have an option so I follow them and fortunately for her, Mare does the same.

Then out of the blue,
- just when I thought we might be fine- the panick erupts as a gunshot echoes in the yard. Suddenly I can see glimpses of scarlet red all around me. If they're here just to save Mare or to also harm the royals, I don't know. Nevertheless I am in danger. I create two metal daggers out of my dress and look around, no one is charging at me.

I remember my fathers for leaving the castle after the wedding, leaving Maven to create our own kingdom. The same fear comes back to me with that thought: I would be a princess, he will use me and marry me to someone for power. I can't let that happen. I want to be free for once! I want to be with Elane.

I follow Mare assuming she is trying to get out of this place. Maybe I could go with the scarlet guard? Anything so I could get away...

Maybe it is the mindset of wanting freedom, maybe not, but as I feel those blades heading for Mare I leap in between them. I try to stop them but something is holding me back. With horror I realise that behind me, Mare still has her silent stone shackles on! The blades go through my dress and I fall to the ground. The pain is immediately shooting throughout my body. My eyes search for whoever they came from but all I find is Tolly's horrified face as he rushes to me. I feel bad. He obviously meant to kill Mare, but it might cost my life instead! My head is in his lap and I can see him turning away every now and then and scream for something. There are tears in his eyes and he keeps saying his sorry, how he didn't see me coming. I try to tell him that it's okay, that I know he was going for Mare, but nothing comes out of my mouth.

All the sounds around me are muffled and the last thing I remember before losing my consciousness is an unnatural heat coming over me.

Maven? Cal?

*Present*

Everyone is staring at me; expect Mare. She is looking down at her plate picking at the food. I'm surprised to find myself pitying her. I bet she wants to be here just as much as I do...

"Why did you save her Evangeline?" Cal asks me with a frustrated voice. He must be eager to understand why the girl who seemed to hate Mare saved her life.

I open my mouth but immediately close it. I don't want them to know I wanted to be free. I don't want to seem vulnerable. They can't find out my father's plans either.

They're all waiting and I see Cal change an annoyed look with a man sitting across him with only one good eye. A blond boy is gazing at Mare. If the look is worry or longing, I'm really not sure.

How long passes, I don't know. However most of the others go back to eating expect the old queen Anabel. She is still looking at me with a curious but threatening look. I stare right back. She can't break me. She can't scare me.

Suddenly Mare stands up. She gives Cal what seems to be an apologetic glance as she rushes towards the door. She opens it but turns around one last time to stare at me and say "Thank you"

We finish brunch in silence.
