Panic Attack

I took a deep, slow, relaxing breath in. My eyes scanned the horizon, there was nothing but the sun setting slowly in front of me on this long straight road. Each side of the road my car was speeding along was tall dry grass, maybe wheat, I haven't been out of the city for long.

When I focused my attention back onto the road ahead of me I noticed the warning signals for train tracks steadily creeping closer to my car. I let my foot off the gas and slowly pressed on my break to cross the tracks without messing up my tires. I took in another slow breath, closing my eyes appreciating the silence, and felt the telltale signs of a panic attack rising in my chest.

I opened my eyes and felt my hand start to shake steadily. I stopped my car, still in the middle of the road, not caring as I tried to control my breathing. I felt my chest tighten and my body tensed up, all of a sudden my normal-sized car felt small and cramped. I quickly unbuckled from my seat belt, fighting with my unsteady hands to open my door and I stood on the side of the road.

I put my arms up, resting my hands on my head, and slowly lowered myself to be sitting while lying on my car's closed driver's side front door. My vision tunneled and I felt my world slowly slipping away.

POV shift

I was running through the waist-high dry grass outside of my packs territory with Jakie, Samantha, and Justin. Samantha was counting while the rest of us hid for hide and seek. Justin just turned 7 and the rest of us were still six and he would continue his bragging until next month when it was my birthday.

My oldest brother, Damien, just became our packs beta and my mom made it sound really important but I didn't see the point, it's just another job in the pack, I would rather be the alpha.

"60!" I heard Samantha yell out into the dusk, I quickly ducked further down into the grass I was hidden behind. She'll never find me here, I snickered to myself. I steadied my breathing and realized I could smell a werewolf I didn't recognize. I slowly looked over my shoulder, all the stories my mother told me about pups getting stolen by evil rogues in the night flashed in my mind.

I stood up out of the grass quickly, scared of never seeing my mother or father again, and ran away from my hiding spot towards my house. Samantha spotted me quickly and yelled out, "I found you! You aren't even trying!" while laughing.

"Jamie! Justin! Come out, we need to get inside!" I yelled out, barely glancing behind me while running up the porch of my house. Once I got inside I slammed the door behind me and ran to find my mother. I jumped into her arms and hugged her, "Mommy, there's a rogue hiding in the grass," I cried into my mother's shoulder.

I heard the other moms stand up quickly to get their children from outside. I sniffled as my mother wrapped her arms around me and hugged me back. She softly shooshed into my ear and ran her fingers through my hair, calming me down.

"What happened?" She asked once my breathing steadied. "I could smell a rogue in the grass when I was hiding from Samantha," I choked out in between small sobs. "It's okay," She whispered hugging me tighter.

She then lowered me off of her lap as Jamie, Samantha, and Justin's mothers all came back inside holding their children. "There's a rouge near the house," She said to the other moms before looking down at me, "Stay here okay, I'm going to go get your brother so the rogue leaves."

She started walking towards the door when I cried out, "Mom don't go please!" I felt Justin's small arms wrap around me so my mom could leave. She glanced behind her and said, "It'll be okay sweety, stay inside. I'll be back as quickly as possible."

With that, she walked out the front door and I turned around and cried into Justin's shoulder.

POV shift

I ran my fingers through my hair as I finally got to relax for the first time since that morning. I sighed and thought about how my friend's upcoming wedding and other things that I knew would be happening in the coming months, trying to sort out my mental calendar in my head.

Ash is supposed to be having her pup next week, Cormac is planning on harvesting his crops on the west side as they were ready to be stored for the winter and Raven is now in charge of the trade of livestock between ours and the neighboring packs.

Just as I let out a breath and reopened my eyes my door was opened. I quickly looked over to my front door to see my mother walking in, in a panic. I jumped up quickly as she spoke, "Crispen, your brother smelt a rouge by the road, I need your help."

"Where is he now?" I asked as I walked out of my door. She followed me as I walked down my small driveway. "He's at my home with some queens and their kids,"

At least he's safe, Alexzander is my only sibling. My mom wasn't planning on having any more pups but when my father died and she got a new mate years after she had me, she felt ready for another child. I glanced back at her, the fear and concern on her face only vaguely concealed as she ran alongside me.

"It'll be okay mom, you know how much Alex likes to overreact," I said with a small laugh, trying to make her feel better. She shot me a small smile but I could tell she was still terrified for her youngest pup.

When I looked back ahead of me we were already at my mom's house and I turned to walk up her driveway and held the door open behind me for my mother. Alexzander ran into my arms and gave me a very big hug, "Hey kiddo, it's okay," I said soothing him as he cried into my shirt.

I looked around the room from where I was, crouched down so my brother could reach my shoulder to hug me. Three queens were sitting on my mom's couch all holding their own pups in their arms. The room was lit by my mother's various lamps that gave the room a soft glow as the sky outside fully darkened into night.

I slowly let Alex off of me and looked back to my mom, "Was it just outside?" I asked. "I was hiding in the grass when I smelt it," Alex said, his tone surprisingly clear for his tear-stained face. I smiled softly at him and ruffled his hair. "Okay buddy, you and your friends are going to stay here with all of your moms," I said now looking at the queens in the room.

"I'm going to go and see who was out there in the grass, okay?" Alex was clearly upset but he didn't try to stop me as I walked out into the night from the back door. My mother had a small back porch that led to her backyard. I could see pretty far out into the miles and miles of dry grass that lined the one road that led into my pack because of the small glass porch light that was now behind me as I walked off the porch.

I walked out into the dry grass that started lightly catching on my pant legs as I tried to identify a sent distinct from the grass that was blinding my mind. I assumed if it was an active attack they would have already moved on so I wasn't trying to conceal myself as I attempted to identify where the sent had come from.

I was maybe five yards away from the porch when I picked up the scent of a werewolf only lightly covered by the grass scent, this scent is fresh. I took a few more steps forward, from where I was I couldn't see the road, as the grass was tallest just before the ground became asphalt. Could someone be on the road? Did they know I was here?

I gathered my courage and quickly pushed through the grass and stepped onto the road. I quickly looked back and forth and felt my body relax as I noticed a woman werewolf sitting on the ground, with her back on a small red car that was still on.

I tensed up again as I realized her breathing was shallow and uneven, and she seemed to be drifting into and out of consciousness.

I was only planning on making this like three sentences long but I figured it deserved a bit more, let me know if anyone would like more by commenting.
