THE NEWS THAT COLIN CREEVEY HAD BEEN attacked and was now lying as though dead in the hospital wing had spread through the entire school by Monday morning. The air was suddenly moving around the castle in tight-knit groups, as though scared they would be attacked if they ventured forth alone.

Ginny, who sat next to Colin Creevey in Charms, was distraught, but Harper felt that Fred and George were going the wrong way about cheering her up. They were taking in turns to cover themselves with fur or boils and jump out at her from behind statues. They only stopped when Percy, apoplectic with rage, told them he was going to write to Molly and tell her Ginny was having nightmares.

Meanwhile, hidden from the teachers, a roaring trade in talismans, amulets and other devices was sweeping the school. Neville bought a large, evil-smelling green onion, a pointed purple crystal and a rotting newt-tail before Harper pointed out he was in no danger: he was a pure-blood, and therefore unlikely to be attacked.

"They went for Filch first," Neville said, his round head fearful, "and everyone knows I'm almost a Squib."

Harper sighed. "No, you're not, Neville. We'll just have to work on your confidence."

That night, when Harper was coming from the library—she had just finished her Charm homework—she could feel something or someone following her. Turning around a corner, she slipped behind a statue, wand raised.

Cedric walked around the corner and seemed surprised to see the hallway empty. Harper quickly stepped back back into the hallway and put her wand back into her pocket before crossing her arms.

"Looking for me?"

He jumped up, turned around and pointed his wand at her. However, as his eyes met her, he lowered his wand.

"Harper, I—" he began, but stopped when he took a deep breath. "I saw you leaving the library alone and you know, with all the attacks, I just wanted to make sure you arrived at Gryffindor's Tower safely."

Harper smiled, touched by his kind gesture. "That's very kind of you, but you could have just asked me if you could come along. Don't be a stalker."

Cedric laughed as he puts his wand back into his pocket. "You do have a point," he said. "Would it be all right if I accompany you?"
