Gone. It was all gone. The money, the ship. Her family.
Her parents were returning home after completing a trade deal in America when a sudden storm picked up in the Atlantic and sunk their ship. Watery graves lay waiting for all on board. With no bodies to recover there was no funeral to be held; Charlotte and her sister, five years her elder, graced black in mourning.

There was a slight problem, however, in that the girls' father had left all the money and lands to whomever the girls wed. It had been his desire to have both of his daughters married by the time he left the mortal world. This wish, however, was not to be granted, in turn, meaning the girls had few ways in which to acquire the fortune.

They were left destitute. With only one sensible way to turn, the girls made it their mission to have Eliza, the elder of the two, marry the man promised to her since infancy.
