STORY TREATMENT #1

Avatar:  A Prelude to Pandora

CHTHON

Lastest

Notes (new stuffs)

- do they survive? (ever) make it back/or not?  @ minimum the info about unobtanium x pandora needs to get back (along with other mission info...?)  the chthon mission crew & samples may or may not...

- observations & probes @ proxima centauri>polyphemus>pandora (up to the time of the chthon mission).  basic system mapping, signs of life on pandora, unusual electromagnetic readings, etc. (matched up with e-m readings from unobtanium samples from meteorite samples from chthon)

-spacers/1st contact stuff:

-baskers stuff:

-human society/ies:  -  asteroid mining?  environmental stuff....-_?  global warming? mass extinctions?  worse case scenario-s? with industrialis/zation in space, material wealth, social/wealth gaps,  poor distribution of wealth,  etc.?  also "worst case scenario s"....?  other issues, etc....?  'dystopian future'

Working Notes:

1st (hu-)manned expedition into (near-by) deep interstellar space.  pre- proxima centauri, etc.   the target of the mission is Chthon (as described below); an extra-solar object (a "wandering" planet) currently traversing the extreme outer edges of Sol/the Solar system -'s gravity well.  say 05. - 1.5 lightyears away?  MUCH closer than the nearest (other) star systems, but still in "deep water"; JUST within reach using available state of the art/bleeding edge human technology (at that time).

stuff that happens:

they/ship/mission get to chthon

they discover small/limited amounts of unobtanium, & work out that it is from meteorite impact(/s) dated to a time when chthon was traversing the (proxima?) centauri region...   (tie this in with other (known to them in-story) stuff about proxima/etc. -centauri:   observations, probes, developing interstellar capabilities, future mission planning, etc....)

they encounter the 'spacers' (as roughly described below)

they encounter the 'baskers' (as roughly described below)

(what order to put these events/things in...?)

chthon arrival,

baskers & spacers; - which first?

unobtanium

....

OK; IF the mission gets to chthon first (i.e.: before any of the other things happen - specifically BEFORE encountering the spacers), then they would most likely notice the baskers first , IF the baskers have not already been observed by probes, etc.  (probably they SHOULD HAVE noticed something about the baskers, from observations, probes, etc.,  pre- 1st manned mission to Chthon?)

it is very cold & dark out there....

not sure if they (baskers) are life?  not sure if/how intelligent they are?  (& people are strangely uninterested/forgetful-absent-minded-easily-diverted/distracted/averse/etc.... to investigating them....?)

THEN the human mission encounters a spacer ship?   (it comes to them, to Chthon, is in distress/trouble, just passing by, or what....?    - let's say it comes to investigate them/the human activity? provisional explanation/for now)

more advanced than us, & VERY different from us (deeply "alien" aliens),  but still obviously (a) "technological" (society/species).
