This tip is probably an advanced version of the previous tip. Whenever a character is created or the personality or details of any existing character is being written about, it's necessary to do an extensive study of the characters to give them depth.

Original characters (OCs for short), which are characters author's create from their imagination, have to have their personalities, likes/dislikes, fears, things that make them happy or sad, etc., well thought out so it is known how they will react in any given situation.

For characters that already exist, mostly with regard to Fanfiction, read up as much as possible about the characters – their personality and their take on life.

I'll give you an example on how I have worked with one of my favorite characters of all time – Aizen Sosuke from Bleach! I, for one, find Aizen to be a really difficult character to decipher because he's so...mysterious. He's always so cool, so placid in expression that no one knows what he's thinking about of feeling or planning.

In my first fanfic with him as the romantic interest, 'Into the Sweet Darkness', Aizen's personality is a little hazy – I kind of maintained his badass-ness as much as I could while having him develop a soft spot for my OC Sana. In my second work, 'Healing his Solitude', I read up a lot about his personality – why he became the bad guy, why he was so cold to those around him to the extent of seeing everyone as nothing more than pawns, why he preferred solitude – and wrote a story of a doctor named Shiori understanding his fears and insecurities and supporting him emotionally rather than just falling for his smexy-ness and sassy-ness. The stuff I read about were from Fandom Wikis as well as open discussions where people expressed their understanding of Aizen – and it really helped. I was able to bring out a possible side that Aizen might have possessed.

In fact, while I was debating on writing a new Aizen fanfic (or Jurgam Haschwalth fanfic, both of which I didn't do in the end ^^'), I did more research and found out some more possible characteristics of Aizen that I hadn't known or even thought about before.

I'm not saying that I know everything about Aizen now and I can write a fanfic about him with his personality as perfect as what Tite Kubo san has given him. I probably still have many flaws in my interpretation of his personality and thoughts but trying to get as close as possible is the fun in writing about a difficult character, right?

My point here is, whenever a character is being written about, an exhaustive study has to be done on them in order to bring out their best side and perhaps be as close as you could get to original personality/thoughts/views, etc. So open your books and browsers and begin your research! :D
