There is a cave that's dark, lonely and frightening. Sometimes he must fetch things from it.
He enters its maw. The first few meters are fine as he can still see what's around him. It may be darker, but things are still visible.
Other times, he must venture deeper. As he steps further and further down its throat, things become darker and less clear.
He dare not venture too far in case he loses sight of the entrance.
