"You want me to be a freaking Queen?" my tone reached one of mild-hysteria that wasn't so mild.

"Well, we were going to give you the title of 'President', but since the last world government structure didn't work out so well, we figured we'd go back to the archaic tradition of..."

"Who's we?" I raised an eyebrow, sceptical.

"The Council." The way Fang said the word, it sounded so formal, as if the 'Council' had always existed and I was the only one who hadn't known about it.

"I was unconscious for a couple of hours and you've gone along and decided to rebuild the entire world government system?!" Fang leaned back against the railings, looking amused at my outburst. Now my cheeks were red again, but for a more acceptable reason: anger. "And what if I don't want to be Queen?" I challenged.

"We'll nominate someone else." There was an implied dig in his answer, and the image of Lucy with a little sparkling tiara in her perfect blonde hair came to mine. A growl rose in my throat.

"I've been offered the position of Queen before, you know. Remember Doctor Hans Gunther-Hagen and his suggesion of me and Dylan going off to re-populate the world with bird kids?"

Now it was Fang's turn to scowl and I have to admit, I felt a little triumphant. Two could play at this game.

"We picked you because you're a good leader, Max, and you always have been. Since the flock are Gen 54 kids, we're regarded pretty highly here, and when we had to choose one of us to lead, obviously we all voted for you. When we explained why, pretty much the entire island voted for you."

His argument made sense, frustratingly enough. "Why can't you be the leader for once?"

Fang simply raised his eyebrows in response to my suggestion, reminding me of the one time the flock had split up and everything had gone to the dogs. Literally, if you looked at Erasers as big dogs.

"No, Fang," I sighed, suddenly exhausted again. "I'm done. I don't want to be the leader anymore."
