Addy's POV
As my mother walked through the door, I felt an immediate pang of anger surge through my body. I was upset, and I had no idea why. The anger subsided slightly when she came over to me.

"Addy!" she exclaimed. She wrapped her arms around me. I hadn't seen her in months, since I left Seattle.

"Hey, Mum," I smiled. My step-father was next.

"Adelaide," he smiled, his eyes crinkling. He embraced me. He smelled like stale whiskey, and I immediately tensed.

"Hello."

"So where's this Danny fellow?"

My mother knew about the job. My step-father, on the other hand, did not. It wasn't his goddamn business. It wasn't even made known to my biological father. Not that we even knew....Yeah, anyhow.

"Dylan, this is Danny Amendola," I smiled. Danny put his hand to the small of my back. Under normal circumstances, I would've shivered. But this time I moved closer to Danny.

"Well he's not much," my step-father said disdainfully. I clenched my jaw, as did Danny.

"It's good to meet you sir," he managed.

"I'd say likewise, but...."

My blood started to boil. Quickly, before I did something stupid, I blurted,

"Danny and I were actually just on our way out. We have to pick up some things before we go."

Danny looked at me with a raised eyebrow. As I elbowed him, he coughed,

"We were, actually."

I smiled sweetly at my step-father, but as soon as we got out of the door I almost started crying. Danny looked at me with sympathetic eyes as I got in the driver's seat. He didn't argue. I started the car angrily.

"Hey." I didn't respond. "Murph?"

Once again, I didn't respond. Danny sighed and squeezed my hand. I couldn't contain it anymore.

"FUCK!" I finally yelled, slamming my hands down on the wheel.

"Hey, Murph. Look at me." Danny's voice was uncharacteristically soft. I looked over, and he brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. "What was that about?"

"My mother's fucking deadbeat, drunk, asshole of a husband," I sighed, putting my head in my hands. He frowned.

"H-He's not your father?" Danny raised his eyebrows.

"I don't know who my father is."

"Oh...I-I'm sorry," he stuttered. I rubbed my face with my hands. Then I sighed.

"It's alright."

"So where are we goin'?" he asked softly.

"Anywhere. Anywhere. I can't. I need to get out. Um...let's go to the grocery store. We can pick up some snacks for the road. I want to leave. I hate even being in the same room as him."
