Karina had hoped that they would somehow not need to talk.
She had woken up early that morning and had lay in bed thinking. She didn't want to talk. She was afraid what would come out if she started.
She loved Maks, and she knew that. But what girl wouldn't be scared of her first true love that broke her heart? She knew that what her and Maks had was special. It was an insane love that you could only read about. But lately, her life seemed to be one big fairy tale. The wicked mother in law. The big ball where all eyes were on them. The kiss that glued back her shattered heart. She knew Maks was the one, she just didn't know if everyone else understood that.
Karina turned around to look at Maks' sleeping beauty. He looked so relaxed and peaceful. Karina wouldn't mind waking up like that everyday. She pressed a soft kiss to his forehead before jumping out of bed to make breakfast.
Now she knew there was no turning back.
"So..." she said, returning to the present.
"Babe," Maks said while taking her hand in his. "I love you and I'm not going to let anyone or anything change that. I know what happened 5 years ago scarred us both, but we're different people. Fate has brought us back together, and I know there will be bumps in the road and obstacles we must overcome, but I love you, Karina Smirnoff. And nothing or nobody is gonna change that. I want you to know that whatever we decide on today will not effect my love and passion for you."
"Oh Maks..." Karina whispered. She was completely taken away by Maks' sweetness. "I wish it were that simple..."
"What do you mean, babe?" Maks asked, a little nervous. Thoughts raced through his head at a million miles an hour.
"I don't know," Karina said. She buried her head in her hands, trying not to cry.
"Princess, what's the matter?" Maks asked, alarmed. "You know you can tell me anything."
"I just don't think that your family would ever accept me back..." she admitted.
"Oh babe..." Maks sighed. He knew she was right. "I don't care what they say, you are my true love. Nothing they say will change that."
"But that's your family, Maks. Family over everything and I would never take you away from them," Karina said. She loved him, and there wasn't anything she wouldn't do for him. But take him away from his family? She'd rather die.
"I know, Karina. But Val, Tony, Nicole, Teddy, Alex, Eugene, and my aunts and father love you. I love you... isn't that all that matters?" Maks cried, taking her hands into his shaky ones.
"It is, for me. But I can't take you from your mother. I can't!" She cried. Karina stood up and walked into the kitchen.
"Babe..." Maks called, following after her. He wrapped his arms around her stomach. "That's why you're scared? My mother?"
"You don't know," Karina said between sobs, "what she said to me when we broke up."
Maks was shocked. His mother managed to instill permanent fear into Karina. "What...what'd she say?"
"She told me if I ever came near you she's make sure that was the end of me. She made me promise that I would never go near you," Karina yelled. A fresh set of tears sprung to her eyes. She buried her head into Maks' neck. "I'm sorry Maks... I can't take you away from your mother..."
"But Karina... I love you..." Maks said before kissing her passionately. She pushed him away before her shaking her head.
