Flashback
Some point in 2012
I let out an ear-piercing scream as I grabbed a rock and threw it at the front door. Earl popped his head out of the door and yelled, "Make that an entire day tomorrow you're not allowed back here too for that!" And then proceed to slam the door.
An annoyed sigh left my mouth. "From someone that'd rather talk things out more than anything – it's a real dick move to resort in kicking your daughter out for the night or so! Especially on her fucking sixteenth birthday!"
As I started to walk away from the house, figuring out my next course of action (all while trying to fight back the urge to cry), I saw a man standing on the other side of the street staring at me. From what I saw, the man looked to be in his late thirties. He had dark brown hair that he had tied up. His beard looked trim and how he presented himself made him seem like he was a person that kept up with his appearance along while wearing a pair of yellow-tinted glasses. I would be lying to if I said that this man wasn't at least a little bit attractive. The man was also carrying a small book in his hands. "Sorry for making you see that," I apologized and tried to walk away from him quickly; however, his voice stopped me.
"It's fine. I've seen, and been through, worse myself," the man said. "Still horrible that...whoever that man is to you did that on your birthday," he quickly added.
I shrugged my shoulders as I walked up towards him. That's where I noticed his blue eyes behind the glasses; the most beautiful shade of blue I've ever seen on anyone. For some reason, maybe it was out of force of habit, but the two of us started walking away from my house. "That was my dad you heard telling me an extra day is added for me being kicked out of the house, but it's fine, my whole family seems to hate me anyway; so I'm not too upset about it. Despite you hearing my voice crack as I speak, trying to hold back tears," I explained.
"How do they possibly hate you? In my opinion, you seem to be the kind of daughter any parent would want."
"Well," I started. "My mom pretty much admitted to me that she hates my guts, wishes I was never born, wished I would've died while she gave birth to me. On top of that, she had that I'm the reason for all of her problems, the reason that she and my dad got a divorce. Thought of me as the spawn of Satan – which is why she named me the way I did."
A look of intrigue came over the man's face. "What IS your name?" He questioned.
"Lilith. Which I know it means demon, I've been judged about it my entire life," I answered.
The man carefully lifted his free hand and said, "You don't have to worry about judgment on your name on my part."
"Well, to add on all of that, my dad just stood there and agreed with everything that she said. Then when I spoke up about it, he and I got into some argument about it which resulted in me getting kicked out," I explained.
I looked up at the man and saw that he was studying my face, not giving off a single expression. Man, he looks kind of adorable right now. "You remind me of someone," he said.
"Huh?" I questioned.
The man nodded his head in a 'yes' motion. "You do. You remind me of someone who was once young, feels alone in the world and just wants to feel like they belong," he explained.
"Well, not exactly like that, but that's me for the most part," I said.
"I got just the solution—"
"Look," I started, cutting him off in the process. "I know where this is going. The book in your hands gave it away. I'm not a religious person by any means of the sort – I probably would burn up in a church if I step foot inside one. So whatever religion you want me to join, the answer is going to be a no from me," I explained.
The man opened up his mouth to try and find the right words to say but closed it. When he opened up his mouth for the second time, he handed me the book that was in his hand. "The group is called Eden's Gate, you'll fit right in with them and we'll treat you like the family that you deserve to have. At least read this book, it's the word of The Father of Eden's Gate. If you slightly change your mind, there's going to be a sermon tomorrow afternoon. You should stop by and take a listen; we're not what you think we are."
I hesitantly took the book out of his hands. "Thanks, I guess. Look, I told you my name so I think I should at least ask you for yours."
"Joseph," Joseph answered. "I shall be expecting you there tomorrow. Happy birthday Lilith," was what he last said to me before walking away.
Well, that was interesting was the thought that ran through my head as I glanced down at the book in my hands. It was a small book with a leather-looking cover. It was a cross on it, a different cross than the one I'm used to seeing in school. Accompanying the cover it had just four words.
The Book of Joseph.
