KAIDEN SLUMPED INTO HIS SEAT, folding his arms across his chest as he fought to keep his eyes open. Alaric had awoken them all unnecessarily early that morning, arranging a school-wide urgent assembly.
Kaiden was empathetic ━ some days, at least ━ but certain factors determined how empathetic the boy was. Like the time of day, for instance. Issues happening before 8 am usually didn't receive the type of attention that they should.
"Given our recent influx of monsters, Sheriff Donovan, interim Mayor Lockwood, and I have decided we need to take drastic action," Alaric announced as he stood at the front of the Grand Hall, addressing the students.
Both Kaiden and Hope perked up then ━ their surprised gazes focusing on the stern figure of their Uncle Tyler. It was serious, then.
"Please give the Sheriff your full attention."
Alaric moved from the podium, swapping places with Matt as he took the stand. "Like Dr Saltzman was saying, local girls Dana Lillilen and Sasha Stoteraux didn't come home last night," Matt announced, causing a few murmurs to break out across the students.
"Dana sometimes skips town for a few days to party, but this is a first for Sasha."
Matt nodded at the students before moving to stand next to Tyler again as Alaric re-took the stand. "Thank you, Sheriff Donovan. Now, while the knife is away with Dorian and things are quiet on his end, it won't hurt to assume the worst━"
"Must be bad if they brought your Uncle in," Asher spoke in a hushed tone as he nodded towards Tyler, who was currently running his eyes over the Upper-Class students as though he could judge who was responsible for Dana and Sasha's disappearances.
Kaiden shrugged as he sat up a little straighter, "I suppose." The teen was quiet for a moment as he studied his friend with a raised brow, "had any late-night snacks recently?"
Asher looked positively affronted by Kaiden's audacity. The vampire frowned, clenching his jaw tightly as he moved his eyes back to the front. "I'm going to take the high ground and pretend like you didn't just accuse me of feeding on the locals."
Kaiden's eyebrow remained raised as he looked at Asher in an unimpressed manner. It wasn't as though the teen truly believed Asher had anything to do with it, but the vampire did have a past. Much like every other student that attended the school. Only, his was a little more... decorated.
Asher scoffed, "you heard ol' blue eyes. Dana has a history of running away."
