"Mr. Valdez, Mr. Valdez."
Leo popped out of his forge to see Harley running down the road leading into down. He wove through Farmer Underwood's geese, who had gotten loose from the poultry yard."What news, boy?" Leo replied, wiping his hands on his apron; the soot and grease from the endless stream of farming tools that needed repairs had blackened them
"It's Lord Skye. He's going to fight a duel."
"With who?"
"A Captain Castellan. It has something to do with His Lordship's sister and one of the young ladies who's staying at Skye Castle."
Leo knew that a few months earlier, Lady Thalia had a romance with an officer in the regiment stationed in Skye-on-Styx, and her family disapproved. Harley explained that the lovers kept in contact through Miss Chase, and His Lordship eventually found out about it.
"Lieutenant Jackson went this morning to bring Lord Skye's challenge to Captain Castellan."
"Have you heard when the duel will take place?"
"The day after tomorrow."
Their conversation was interrupted by the squealing of a pig. Farmer Underwood chased after an unfortunate sow destined for the slaughter. The sow ran towards the stone and brick wall, which surround the pigpen, but Farmer Underwood managed to catch her.He struggled to hold her still as he slit her throat and collected the blood in a bowl.
"I imagine Juniper is making blood sausages," Leo said as he walked back towards the forge. "Harley, would you go back into the house and check on my father."
