CHAPTER ONE: TEAM OF IDIOTS
If I had to choose between going to school or waiting for my brother to get off from work, I'd be willing to choose the school at this point.
But today is my day off, and since I can't stay home alone - all because of one accident where I skipped school to go to a book signing of my favorite comic book creator at the mall, plus a shoe sale - I have to listen to his friends complain about what was going on with their cars. What kind of girl they wanted in the back seat next weekend. And what meal they wanted to eat tonight.
Boys. They all want two things; food and sex.
They were trying not to express curiosity about a letter I was hiding in the kitchen, hiding it from the two idiots in the room with me because I think they would go tell my brother before I did. Getting into Yale was a big deal, and I wanted to be the one to tell Roman about it.
First of all, there was Heath, who likes to say that his mother named him after the actor 'Heath Ledger,' which is possibly true. Heath was a six-foot-two-blue-eyed hazard who loved to annoy me. He had blond hair down to his shoulders and liked to put beanies on his head. Today it was a Black Sabbath one that looked similar to mine.
If he stole it from my room, again, I'd murder him.
Julien, the only one in the group who didn't bother me too much, given that he was three years older than me, was sitting in the recliner on his phone watching TikTok. He had black hair and always wore a white shirt that had holes in it even though he had brand-new clothes. He worked with me at 'Taco Cup,' which is another story we'll get into later.
Yeah, these guys are real charmers.
But there was one of them that I found to be really charming. Levi Hollworth, who is my brother's absolute best friend.
Levi was charming with his sweet smile and had ways of making girls swoon by being not only handsome but a complete gentleman. But he wasn't always that way.
Roman, my brother, met Levi when Levi was sixteen. Levi was almost heading for Juvenile Hall when Roman stepped into the picture. They met at a basketball game and Levi's brother, whom Roman had gone to school with, was worried about him.
Well, Levi and Roman got along so well that Roman was able to save him even though Levi didn't finish school, but it was his choice, not nobody else's.
And now, they had both left me alone with thing one and thing two.
I hope that would explain why I was sitting on the living room sofa eating Pasta-Roni and watching Austin Powers with Jul and Heath.
Heath would burst out with a laugh every five minutes, making Jul give him a strange look. I just dug through my Pasta-Roni as we watched the movie and I waited on my brother to give him the good news.
It scared yet excited me. Would he cry? Would he be happy for his little sister? Would he be proud that I had gotten into the dream school that our parents had gotten into?
If you met my brother, you'd know why I was terrified.
Roman was six feet two, he had a nice grin that made any girl in town swoon, he had that look about him that screamed, 'I dare you to screw with me.' He still wore a black leather jacket-half of the time without shirt-and black jeans with black work boots. He had his Florida tan, his hair was greasy, and hung back between his shoulder blades, but he never let it cover his eyes.
He also worked at an automotive garage as head engineer. But that wasn't always the case. At one point my brother was heading to become a big-time basketball star, but he dropped everything to take care of me.
