Anne was heading to the Blythe-Lacroix’s home. Gilbert had told her that Bash had left to fetch his mother on Charlottetown, who would help them with Delphine, and wouldn’t be back for a day. She decided she would try to help Gilbert with Delphine, after all she had experience with children from her earlier years in service and Marilla was occupied with something else, but said she would catch up with her later.
She wasn’t sure in what position she and Gilbert were, last week she was almost sure he had given her the eyes that supposedly were reserved for her, the gaze that could steal her heart, but break it because she knew the truth, he had those eyes for someone else. For a moment, and only a moment, she wondered if deep down he had feelings for her, but shook the feeling away.
She arrived and knocked on the door. She heard footsteps coming and tried to fix her braids. When the door opened, she looked at the thief of her heart, his dark curls shining with the sun, his jaw clenched, and his tired hazel eyes turning soft when he looked at her.
“Anne.” He breathed her name.
“Gilbert.” She breathed his.
They stood there; it was a moment in which both of them got lost in each other, and wouldn’t notice it when everyone else did. They gazed at each other; she stared at the eyes she liked, and him wondering why his heart was trying to talk to him by just staring at her. Last week at the porch, when Anne had left, a thought crossed his mind, did he liked Anne? It had crossed his mind before, when they danced, and it happened again when they were on the porch.
He awkwardly scratched the back of his neck at the thought, then he realized that Anne was still waiting for him and turned to the side so she could get in.
“I thought you would need help with Delphine.” Anne said.
“How kind of you.” he answered.
He guided her towards where the adorable baby was. Anne smiled when she saw her, the little baby had a yellow hat on, probably made by Bash, and a little smile on her face, already starting to show some teeth.
“Hello Delphine.” the red-headed girl whispered. The little girl started to laugh as Anne picked her up, carefully. “I see that she has new teeth.” She said towards Gilbert, who nodded.
“Yeah, everyone in the house knows.” He said, remembering those horrible nights in which she wouldn’t stop crying. “I’ll go make some food.”
“Ok.” Was all Anne said.
Gilbert walked away, leaving Anne and Delphine alone. She wondered if Gilbert really knew how to cook and hoped he didn’t burn the house down.
She stared at Delphine; she felt the urge to tell her everything to her, since she didn’t have Diana anymore. It had been a week since their fight, and they still weren’t on speaking terms. So she decided she would talk to Delphine, maybe it would help her sleep. She lowered her volume so Gilbert couldn’t hear her.
“You know Delly,” that was the nickname she had decided for her. “I have feelings for your Uncle Gilbert. I don’t know if he feels the same tough.” The baby giggled. What Anne didn’t know was that Gilbert had also talked to Delphine about the topic, he was unsure, while she knew. He talked about how she looked like a fire princess, her eyes as blue as the sky, reflecting the stars, and when they danced, it was just the two of them. But still the stupid boy hadn’t realized that he liked Anne.
Anne started to spin slowly with Delphine in her hands, singing the song that Mary used to sing to the little baby.
