Root For You

There are things that just appear
Out of nowhere they are here
These happenstances I come to cherish
But much too quickly do they perish

I know there's nothing one can keep
But for the lost ones I still weep
A necromancer lost their power
I watch it dying by the hour

On a Tuesday afternoon
You claim your hands were tools of gloom
You want me to crack you open and see
That you are not what you're cracked up to be

But I don't stare into the dirt
And we all grow from times of hurt
In the ground we're all downtrodden
Wither or become too sodden

You brought joy in your own way
A stormcloud pierced by a sunray
A fluke that we parallel lines
Did intersect each others' lives

All things must eventually fade
The tide must subside and cascade
No longer riding the rising wave
Tears watering the washed-up grave

But I can't let you so soon depart
A crushed but ever-pouring heart
If only you could know what I know
I struggle to speak, so I try to show

We've never really truly met
But all the same, I won't forget
How we carried each other across rifts
Turning memories into many gifts

When the flashpoint ignites
You can take my flashlight
I'll hold you up if you hold out
And don't hold back if you must shout

If you promise to hang in
When all that's bad is happening
Then I will promise to remain
As long as I can in your lane

In the end, I can't do much at all
I'm just as broken and just as small
Two cogs on the same contraption
Products of the same reaction

But we are not the reason why
With all its might, the world will try
—It's out of spite—to kill our flowers
And we have roots that will not sour

Our blooms are not perennial
It's true we are ephemeral
But anchor your roots in the ground
I'm rooting for you this round
