Interestingly, Jahanara was also one of the few Mughal women who owned a number of ships and traded as an independent entity. She maintained trade relations with the English and the Dutch.

She ordered that the ship make its voyage to Mecca and Medina and, every year 151 pounds of rice should be sent by the ship for distribution among the destitute and needy of Mecca.

She organized almsgiving on important state and religious days, supported famine relief and pilgrimages to Mecca.

She commissioned translations and commentaries on many works of classic literature.

She made important financial contributions in support of learning and the arts.

From her personal allowance she sponsored the building of the Jama Masjid Agra.

She constructed a famous legendary bazar Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi.
