MADELEINE WAS SAT in between Blair and Serena at the Waldorf Residence, the three girls giggling about past memories of the day (although it was the first time Madeleine had ever celebrated the Holidays).
"What's Chuck doing today?" Serena questioned tentatively, Blair avoided eye contact with the blonde.
"Why are you asking me, it's M that seems to be his best friend." Blair retorted.
"Well you guys are friends too." Serena began, "And, Blair, look you know you can tell us anything. I'd be the last person to judge."
"And with good reason." Blair spat back, which caused Serena's kind and calm composure to melt away.
"Blair we saw you with Chuck." Serena sighed.
"I don't know what I was thinking." Blair began, disgust laced in her voice. "I mean sleeping with him once I understand, but twice?"
"You slept with him? Ugh! Blair!" Serena cringed, causing Blair to violently shush her friend.
"What happened to no judging?" Blair scowled, Madeleine felt out of place whilst the two argues as though she wasn't between them.
"I though you wanted to wait, and make it special." Serena sighed, rubbing her hand across her forehead.
"Oh so Nate gets the free pass and I'm the slut?" Blair spat. "And besides, nothing hurts more than sleeping with the best friend. Right S? I slept with Chuck, and you know what? I liked it!" Blair scoffed at Serena.
"I'm not listening to this, you slept with Chuck for god sake Blair! Where's your dignity?" Serena whined, pulling her bag around her body. "Let's go M. I'm not doing Thanksgiving here."
"S, I think you're being a little harsh. Blair made a mistake, or if she likes him then she didn't. It's not fair to judge what she did, or who she did it with." Madeleine smiled softly at her cousin, who only stared at her with a harsh expression.
"How can you sit and defend her after that!" Serena shouted, causing Madeleine's breath to become shallow.
"Because I made mistakes too! Alright, I've made them too! And, I'm good friends with Chuck, you know deep down he's actually really sweet." Madeleine stood up from her chair, snatching her phone off the table. "I'll see you at school B, but I don't want to celebrate this holiday if all it's going to cause is arguments, save me some pumpkin pie for Monday."
"Let's go." Serena turned on her heels.
"No, I'm not coming with you either. Chuck's a nice person and Blair can do as she likes, even if her moral for it was wrong. I'll be home tonight." Madeleine walked away from both girls, blowing out her lips as she waited for the elevator.
☆
Madeleine wandered aimlessly through the streets of the Upper East Side. The cold wind nipping at her skin, filling her with the regret of not bringing a jacket with her. Madeleine soon enough found herself returning to a familiar park bench, however this time, it wasn't her sat there alone.
"Nate?" Madeleine asked softly, watching the boy turn his head towards her. "Can I sit?"
"Yeh, yeh sure." Nate smiled, shuffling over so the redhead could sit beside him.
"No big dinner to be attending Archibald? I'd imagine so." Madeleine laughed, although it soon die when she noticed his expression.
"My mom's mad at my dad for his charges and I could stand another minute in there." Nate laughed awkwardly, his eyes fixed on his lap.
Madeleine jumped up from the bench, standing straight in front of Nate. "Come on, I feel like a hot chocolate, my treat." Madeleine outstretched both her hands, grabbing onto Nate's and pulling him from the bench.
The two walked in silence until they reached the small cafe they'd visited together once before. Madeleine dropped her bag onto a table, turning to see Nate ordering two drinks. When the boy returned Madeleine gave him a playful eye roll and whined at him. "I said it was my treat Archibald, so how much was it? Let my pay you back!"
"A lady should never pay. Seriously it's nothing." Nate laughed, pushing a hot chocolate in front of the Brit. "So, why are you wandering alone? Shouldn't you be with Serena?"
"Her and Blair had a fight, and I just didn't want to be there anymore." Madeleine traced the rim of her cup with her finger whilst she answered. "Plus I'm British, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, just another day for us tea drinkers." Her remark caused Nate to crack a genuine smile, a laugh tumbling from his lips, which made Madeleine giggle too.
The pair stayed for over two hours in the small Brooklyn cafe, not bothering to check their phones - even though they were filled with concerned messages and missed calls. Eventually Nate checked his phone, sighing at the sight.
"I hate to cut this short, but my mom's gonna have a heart attack if I don't get back soon enough." Nate sighed, reluctantly pulling himself up from the small table. Madeleine copied his movements.
"Can't let you walk home alone now can I?" Madeleine laughed, clutching her handbag tightly. "Come on, I'll walk with you."
Madeleine and Nate walked through the bustling streets of the Upper East Side, laughing at horrendous jokes and Nate's old Thanksgiving stories. "So you and Serena and Queen Blair Waldorf had a water fight last year because Serena was pissed? God I wish I was there for that." Nate laughed at Madeleine's statement, prompting her to furrow her eyebrows and questioned him. "What's so funny?"
"Pissed?" Nate chocked out between breaths.
"God you as bad as Chuck when I called him a wanker." Madeleine sighed, playfully hitting Nate with her handbag.
Madeleine carried on walking down the street until she realised only her footsteps could be heard. When she spun around she notice Nate had stopped. Madeleine ran back to the boy, her heels making sharp clicks on the concrete. "This is my house." Nate looked down, scratching the back of his neck.
"Oh." Madeleine said, disappointment washing over her. "I had a really lovely time Nathaniel."
"Can I get your number? So we can keep in contact?" Nate questioned, pulling out his phone and handing it to the girl.
"I really enjoyed today." Madeleine smiled, handing Nate his phone. "I'll see you Monday?"
"Yeh. . . yeh Monday. See you soon Madeleine." Nate smiled, trotting up the steps to his home.
"Bye Archibald, tell your dad I said hey!"
