Heiryung had her first weekend out of the hospital and without her dad.
To be completely honest, she had no clue what to do with herself.
She finished her missing work, figured out what other elective she would take (art), fixed her schedule, and even ate lunch.
It was fixed by Johnny, him being home. Heiryung was just going to eat a bag of chips from the pantry and some noodles, but Johnny caught her in the act and insisted he made her something healthier.
It tasted like leaves and carrots.
Heiryung was too kind though to say it wasn't the best so she shoveled the rabbit food down her throat and finished it, putting a smile on Johnny's face despite the bland dryness on her tongue.
She quickly shut the door to her room, Johnny saying him and Ten sharing wasn't weird. Sometimes she was really suspicious of the two and rather if there was something more than said going on.
That was until she got the text from Mrs. Yang.
It was about her dad.
They had extended the medical induced coma.
That was when Heiryung knew what she wanted to do that day.
"Johnny," she said, "can you drive me to the hospital?"
Johnny looked up from the book he was reading and looked at Heiryung who already had an old shirt of Ten's on tucked into a pair of jeans with chunky sneakers.
"Why," he said getting worried, "are you feeling ok? Does your stomach hurt? Do you feel sick again? Nauseous? Was it the salad?"
Heiryung winced at the mention of the salad and shook her head.
She locked her hands together in front of her body, swaying back and forth on the balls of her feet.
"I want to visit my dad," she said looking down.
Johnny replied with a simple 'oh' and placed the book down before grabbing his car keys.
Heiryung followed him closely, swaying back and forth casually as she did so.
Johnny made his way to the parking garage and unlocked his car. Heiryung got into the front passenger seat and buckled up, Johnny hesitantly starting the car.
Dry silence hung in the air, nipping at Heiryung's lips as she was unable to start a conversation.
When they finally got to the hospital Johnny parked, but left the door locked.
"Do you want me to come in with your or will you be fine," he asked looking at the girl.
Heiryung sighed and rested her hand on the car door handle.
"You can leave I'll call when I want to go home," she said.
Johnny sighed and unlocked the car, Heiryung getting out and heading into the hospital.
She nodded to the lady at the front desk then signed her name in.
"I'm looking for a Minsook Lee," Heiryung said as she looked at the lady.
"Before I tell you the room number may I ask your relation to him," she said looking up through her glasses.
"I'm his daughter... Heiryung Lee," she said nervously.
The receptionist's eyes grew as she nodded as gave Heiryung a visitor pass.
The whole hospital basically knew the man's story at this rate. Stabbed his daughter, his daughter's soulmate ran him through with a broken beer bottle. It was saddening to them to even have to imagine that some kids had to live through such circumstances.
As Heiryung walked through the hallways she couldn't help but fiddle with the sticker on her T-shirt.
She was nervous.
But she was also scared.
This was the man who had ruined her family, her mind, her self image. Why did she care so much.
Why did family mean so much to her when she had no family?
She entered the room, the nurse checking his vitals looking up in confusion.
"Who are you," the nurse said ignoring the name tag on Heiryung's chest.
"Uhm his daughter," she said, "Heiryung Lee."
The nurse quickly nodded and carried on with the check up.
Heiryung took a good look at her dad.
His eyes were closed, stubble on his face as he laid silent, his chest barely rising or falling. He had wires going into his hospital gown. The shallow beeping of the heart monitor.
She took a shallow breath, the nurse finishing and leaving the room.
Heiryung was honestly speechless.
They said that people in a coma could hear you, but Heiryung had only questions that couldn't be asked.
"Dad," she said as she looked at him. "Why did you do that?"
She paused, her voice cracking.
"Do you not love anything anymore," she said, her throat feeling as if it was closing up. "When did it turn sour? What did I ever do?"
A tear fell.
Why?
That was all she could seem to think of.
"Why do you do things you know aren't good," she said, "why did you make her leave. She took my brother."
Heiryung sighed and looked down.
She was then rendered speechless.
She could barely even remember her mom or brother. Why did they leave her behind. Did they no want her?
