Maura was bent down over an excavation site in the Amazon Rainforest. She had been there for days, investigating what looked like a very old hut. Some ornithologists had stumbled across it while looking for a rare bird. So far the had only found some tools and pieces of a skeleton.

"Dr. Monk!" Her assistant, Jesse, called. She had told him to call her by her first name, but he insisted on calling her by the formal name. "Look at this!"

She hurried to the other side of the site, where he was standing. The other archeologists who were helping them had uncovered a small wooden box. "Fascinating!" Maura picked up the box to find it was extremely heavy. It had to be at least thirty pounds. She brought it over to her makeshift desk. The box had to latches, but both were crusted over. She took her tools and carefully chiseled the latches free. Jesse watched over her shoulder as she worked. She lifted the box's lid to find a journal sitting inside. It was amazing intact, for how old Maura believed it to be. As she gently lifted it out, light bounced off something in the box.

"Is that...?" Jesse's mouth hung open.

Laying on the bottom of the box was a bar of gold. Maura nodded. "I think it's real, too." She turned her attention back to the book in her hands. She turned to the first page, which was covered in Spanish text. "We need to get this back to my lab so we can translate it." Sadly she was fluent in French, not Spanish, but she knew people who were. Her and Jesse would be on the first flight back to Boston.
