Chapter 32

I woke thrashing and screaming. Betelgeuse was standing over me, worried sick with a terrified look on his face.

"(Y/N)! (Y/N)!" he hissed, grabbing my shoulders.

I stared up at him, eyes wide and face tear-streaked. "Lawrence!"

I threw myself into his arms, sobbing quietly. Honestly, it's a wonder I didn't wake anyone else up.

He rubbed my back comfortingly and hugged me close. I could tell he wanted to ask questions, but thankfully didn't. He knew I was in a vulnerable, shaken, and scared state right then, and didn't have the energy to answer a bunch of questions right then.

"Hey, it's okay, I got you," Beej whispered soothingly, sitting down on the bed and cradling me in his arms.

I took deep breaths, trying to calm myself down and stop crying. I was finally somewhat calm after about five minutes.

"Um, babe?? Babe, you're bleeding!!"

"W-what?" I pulled away from him, and sure enough, there was blood smeared everywhere from here to kingdom come. My hands immediately flew up to my throat, my eyes wide and my mind going into panic mode.

Because if I still had that wound, that meant that my interaction with Juno in my dream was real.

I scrambled to get out of Beej's arms and raced to the bathroom, flipping on the light. Betelgeuse was immediately behind me, grabbing a wet washcloth and helping me clean up.

"It looks like you just scratched your neck in your sleep," he told me, wiping my throat.

Relief washed over me. "Oh, yeah. Probably."

Betelgeuse worked silently, glancing up at me every once in a while to make sure I was okay and that he wasn't hurting me. After a few minutes of this, I sighed.

"You have questions, I can tell."

"No, it's okay, I don't wanna-"

I cut him off. "Seriously, I'm okay. I can talk about it, now."

He gave me one final glance before sighing and hanging the washcloth back over the sink. I hopped up and sat on the vanity, my back to the mirror. Betelgeuse crossed his arms and leaned against the wall behind him.

"Okay. What in the world was your nightmare about?"

I took a deep breath and mentally shook myself.

"It started out fine. The two of us were sitting on the roof, talking about finding a way to break my curse." I swallowed. "Then, the sky turned red and you were..." I fought back the tears and swallowed the lump in my throat. "You were hurt and bleeding. You were dying and I... I couldn't save you."

His brow furrowed. He didn't say anything, however, so I continued.

"Then, all of a sudden, I was standing in a like, void. Like, it was just me and your body. The rest was empty space. I called out and asked who was causing all of it, and... your mom showed up."

I looked up at him, and Betelgeuse had a look of shock on his face. His hair went through a flurry of colors before settling on a mixture of red and yellow; red for anger and yellow for uneasiness.

"She... She told me to stay away from you, or she would hurt you and... and she would make sure my existence was a 'painful one'. A-and she.... she slit my throat, and I was trying to stop the bleeding...."

"Which is why your neck is all scratched up; because you were clutching at it," Beej finished for me, his eyes glistening with tears. He abruptly pulled me into his chest, hugging me tightly. "I'm so sorry you went through that, (Y/N). I'm so sorry. Nobody should have to go through a nightmare like that."

"Yeah," I responded softly, feeling numb.

Because that's all it was. A nightmare. Nothing more, nothing less. Betelgeuse is right here, and I'm okay. It wasn't real. It didn't happen.

"What time is it?" I asked after a few minutes of silence.

"It's three in the morning," Beej answered, releasing me with one final squeeze. "I'm gonna go grab you some (fav. snack food), I'll be right back," he said before quietly leaving, knowing how much I would need comfort food at a time like this.

I rinsed out the washcloth and hung it up to dry. I rubbed my head wearily. I went to turn off the light, glancing in the mirror as I did so.

I did a double-take. Because there was a little, red mark at the top of my throat just beneath my chin.

It was a semicircle shape.

As if someone had pressed a sharp fingernail there.
