Christmas quarrel

The cold wakes me. My eyes flutter open and the iciness around me is enveloping. I pull this thin green sheet close to my body and shudder. Even my eyes sting. A blinding white light is streaming in from the large window parallel to the bed. Snow is coming down steadily outside leaving a thin layer of frost. I turn over to find the sheets next to be cold and since vacated. The door ten feet across the room has a light shining from underneath and the droplets of constant controlled water flow could only be the sound of the shower.

I groan and turn to the grandfather clock next to the doorway. After taking a moment to admire its antique, I gasp as I realize the time. My parents would be waking up any minute wondering where I am. I kick of the covers and instantly regret it when my feet touch the ground. Even through my socks I can feel the cold wood. I search for my shoes and my them discarded near the dresser. Last night was like a hazy dream and I don't even remember if I brought a coat or not. Surly I would freeze to death in about 3.8 seconds if I didn't have one.

"Shit!" I looked under the bed and I didn't see one anywhere. My long sleeve shirt would surly not due. How did I get here last night without a coat? Was I so blinded in fury I had simply not noticed the cold? Ugh! "Here take this," Malfoy was holding up a large sweatshirt of his. He had come out of the shower wearing only a towel around his waist. I suddenly wondered how he was not freezing. I great fully took the black sweatshirt and pulled it over my head. I was overwhelmed by his cologne. For a moment I was lost in his smell. How could someone smell so good? It did not compute.

"Thanks," I looked down, embarrassed. "Sure you better get out of here though. I have to go to family breakfast and I'm sure you don't want to come," he laughed at his own joke. "Now that would be a Christmas to remember," I smiled slightly, only able to imagine the horror that would bring me. "Unfortunately I don't think you'd be around to remember it," he said a matter of factly. I just nodded, knowing he wasn't kidding.

"I better get going," I said, looking reluctantly out the window. Malfoy put his hands on the sides of my head and kissed me gently. Though I'd kissed him many times before, this one felt different. Like he was being cautious. I liked it. "Sure, but make sure you don't freeze out there," he said. "No promises," I smiled. "Hey you can come back tonight ok? You know, if things get hairy again," he says. I nod and step out into the winter wonderland.

When I go back through my window, the delicious smell of fresh waffles and fresh fruit waft up through the house. I sigh, and head downstairs to face the wrath. My mother and father are both sitting awkwardly across the table, a plate has been filled and set up in the middle for me. I gratefully dive in. The meal is awkward and quiet. When it is finally over we head into the living room with the smartly decorated tree. I plop down in the arm chair and my parents sit rigid on the couch about a foot apart.

"Hermione dear, your father and I would like to talk to you about something," My mother says. They exchange a worried look. "That you are getting divorced? Yes mom and dad, it is not secret that you two have not been agreeing lately," I say, saving the awkward convo. Both of my parents stare at me wide eyed and shocked.

"We are so sorry honey, we know how hard this must be on you," My father tries. "No worries, honest, I just want you guys to be happy," I say. Though deep down it hurts to admit this, I am glad they are pulling the rip cord. Though it seems oddly fast, I think that every relationship has it's hidden flaws and it sure wasn't her responsibility to see them.

When night finally came, I was so glad to get out of the toxic house to go to Malfoy's and escape my parents. The night was cold and so I remembered to bring a coat, but that did not help much on the windy ride over. I flew over the gate high enough to not be spotted as the sun was setting lower in the sky and the last wink of light faded. I perched at my usual spot on the window and I heard voices from below in the courtyard. I knew that I should go inside, but my curiosity got the best of me and I craned forward to listen.

"What are we going to do Bellatrix?" The one women's voice sounded strained. "Calm down cissy. It will be alright." Another voice said. "But, if the lord is dissatisfied...who only knows what he will do." The one called cissy says. "The dark lord will not be dissatisfied, Severus will make sure of that," Bellatrix says. Severus? Severus Snape?

The window behind me opens and Draco is standing there frowning. "What are you doing out there?" He says. I just shrug and follow him back through. "Draco...why were those two women just talking about Severus Snape and what has he got to do with your family and you know who?" I pour out. Malfoy looks up at me. A furious expression is on his face. "Now I see. You were ease dropping," He snarls.

"I just happen to here a small portion of that conversation," I say stepping back. "You should not have heard any of it," He says stepping dangerously close, "Because that would be dangerous for you to know that information. You need to drop it and forget this happened."

"I am sorry I can not just do that! Do you not understand that information like this could help protect my friends, the people I bloody care about Malfoy," I huff. "Do you not care for me Granger?" He angrily replies. "Of course I do, but do you not see that it is bigger then...this then whatever this is," I gesture from me to him. "Yes, granger I do," He steps back, suddenly less angry.
