Chapter 3: Quests and Panic

Calamity's POV

Calamity ran and ran along the many hills of the island to get to the rift. Her brain felt so frazzled that she didn't even think of taking the train. She had to tell someone what happened. Kyubi? Sun Strider? Fable? Dire? All of them? Calamity felt so stressed.
The rift came into view. She didn't bother showing her passport, she just ran through it. Her body had that weird sensation and then she appeared outside of Loot Lake. She then stopped. She took lots of deep breaths and then sighed.
I need to help Lynx. But how? I'm sure she is fine. That weirdo and his muscle cat seemed forgiving. That man almost seemed friendly. But he wouldn't have taken Lynx then... would he? I need to tell this to Kyubi. Or Yonder. Calamity stood there, contemplating through her ideas. Then something clicked in her mind. Drift. She thought. Yonder!
Calamity remembered that earlier today Kyubi had asked her to meet her at the Sofdeez just outside of Paradise Palms. But she couldn't because she was checking out the stone building. This was it! She had to go there now. She started to run and then remembered the train and took that instead.

Kyubi's POV

Kyubi filled his mouth with strawberry froyo (frozen yoghurt). It tasted so good! He could taste the fruity flavor and smell the fresh scent.
"Are you okay? That's your fifth one. Your dad will kill you. Literally kill you." Yonder sighed.
"It's fine!" Kyubi giggled.
"You're actually hilarious!"
Kyubi put down his spoon and pushed away his froyo. He wasn't hungry anymore. Yonder continued to laugh.
"Well, sugar, what I'm about to tell you isn't so funny." Calamity snarled.
"What got into you?" Kyubi gasped. Calamity was acting up again. That was when Kyubi noticed something, "Wait... where's Lynx?!"
"Exactly. Budge up. I have a tale to tell."

Calamity's POV

Calamity told them what happened at the stone building and how Lynx was captured. As the story went on, Kyubi continued to tremble more and more. Whether it was because of anger, fear or despair, Calamity couldn't tell. When she told them about the man's nice act and then how he tricked them, Yonder folded his arms and muttered something unintelligible under his breath. It was obviously a sort of threat.
"I'm going to kill that man. And his weird cat." Kyubi cried.
"I didn't say it would have a happy ending." Calamity sighed.
"What a nasty piece of work." Yonder scoffed.
"The point is- will you help me rescue her?"
"Yes. If it's the last thing I do." Kyubi snarled.

Lynx's POV

Lynx and Midas stood there staring at each other for about two minutes. Journey and Remedy had already left. If only they had stayed... maybe this moment wouldn't be so awkward.
"Do you want to kiss?" Midas asked.
"No! No." Lynx gasped suddenly. This was so humiliating...
"Come on in then." he then turned on his heel and walked back into the room. Lynx followed. It seemed to be a giant office. There was a large symbol above a golden desk. Under the symbol read 'Ghost- We will always help- secretively!'
"Are you spies?" Lynx thought out loud.
"Yes. We are spies. I'm sure you'll enjoy this new position." Midas replied.
Lynx, not expecting an answer, jumped, "Position..?"
"Yes! In fact, you can be a spy too! Just talk to-"
"Is this a dream?"
Midas stared at Lynx for a few seconds. She looked deep into his golden eye. The other eye was white. It was obvious it had been scratched out. Midas sighed, "Well, no."
He then proceeded to grab a paperclip off his desk. He scowled at it. Beads of sweat dripped off his pale forehead. Lynx gasped when the paperclip slowly turned to solid gold.
"OK, Mr Money Fingers whatever you say!" she pleeded, "Just... I don't like the idea of turning into a 24-karat mineral."
"Relax. I can only turn something golden if my emotions are running wild or if I really concentrate." Midas sighed.
The door burst opened and a calico cat with... muscles... ran in. These people are all so... weird. Lynx thought.
"Food man, I need BEEF STRIPS!!!" the cat man hissed. He then turned to Lynx, "Hello there! Mrow."
"Oh my god..." Lynx whispered to herself.
The cat man licked its hand... or paw, whatever it was, and smoothed the fur on his head.
"Meowscles. Please don't upset the new recruit." Midas scoffed.
Meowscles. So that was its name. Weird... unique, but weird.
"Beef strIIIIPS!" Meowscles mrowed.
Midas scowled and then reached into a small fridge beside his desk. It seemed to Lynx that the fridge, unlike the rest of his possessions, was not golden. Lynx just stared in awe with her mouth wide open as Meowscles rolled all over the floor muttering beef strips under his breath as Midas threw strips of meat out of a bag and into his mouth. He was about to return the bag to the fridge when it turned golden in his hands.
Midas sighed. Lynx couldn't help feeling bad for him. Tears that were tinted with gold fell from his eyes.
"Sorry you had to see that. Brutus will tell you about a job I would like you to do. He's the big one in the suit." Midas sniffed.
Lynx left immediately. She walked through the almost empty corridor. The stormtrooper henchmen waved at her. What to think about what she saw. Midas was almost completely different than he was before. She best not worry about it.
Lynx started into a run. Suddenly, somebody collided with her. Their pink beanie fell on the floor.
Lynx gasped worriedly, "Oh! I'm so sorry, here let me get your hat for you. I'm so stupid running in the-"
"Meep." the hat said.
Lynx screamed and fell backwards. The girl sat up. It was the first time Lynx had seen her face. Her iris was a pale blue and her chestnut brown hair was long enough to touch her shoulders. She seemed around the same age as Lynx.
"Sorry, Ollie's a bit angry today. Oh! You're the newbie, Lynx, is it? Brutus told me to find you." the girl giggled, "I'm Skye, by the way."
"Oh... uuuh, hi. Who's Ollie?" Lynx asked. Whether she could actually call it kidnapping, Lynx was unsure.
"My hat/brother/best friend. We hatched from the same egg." Skye explained, putting a smiling Ollie back on her head.
Skye and Lynx wandered down the corridor to find Brutus.
"Egg? Are you human?" Lynx asked.
"Yup. My great great grandpa was human too, some of his genes must have travelled down to me. Ollie's a floofle. A type of shapeshifter." Skye told her.
"Wow! That's really interesting."
They continued to chat until they reached a large circular room with a large holographic table in the middle and lots of doors. A very muscly man was stood behind the table. He looked like a typical bouncer.
"Hello, Skye." the man bellowed. He had a very strong Russian accent.
"Yo, Brutus!" Skye screamed.
Skye ran up to Brutus and hugged him. He did not seem amused.
"How've ya been?" she asked Brutus.
"Brutus has been doing OK and by the mood you have every day then Brutus assumes you are good too." Brutus grumbled politely.
"Is he always this grumpy?" Lynx whispered.
"He's not grumpy, he's happy. He just looks grumpy and sounds grumpy." Skye laughed, "You're happy, aren't you Brutus?" Skye added.
"Yes Brutus is very happy." Brutus grumbled. He did not look happy.
"Anyway, Midas said you'd have a mission for me." Lynx announced, trying to switch the subject away from Brutus' face.
"Oh, yes." Brutus moaned, "Ericka, the case files."
"Of course, Brutus. Sending them to you now." a voice boomed over the intercom. It was the same one that told Midas and Meowscles that there had been a security breach.
Lynx thought of Calamity. She must be so worried. Then she thought of Kyubi. The news must have gotten to him by now. Lynx loved this place and the people she'd met, but she wanted to get back to her friends.
"I have two questions." Lynx muttered.
"Sure. Brutus would like to know." Brutus voiced.
"First, when am I going home? I miss my friends."
"Unfortunately that is confidential information."
"What?"
"It means it isn't safe. Sorry, Lynx." Skye sighed.
"Oh... and my next question."
"Go ahead." Brutus replied.
"Who's Ericka?"
The question she asked was probably one that meant a lot to the Ghost agents. Skye started to cry and Brutus hugged her. Brutus looked sad too. It was the first time she had seen him with a different emotion. Ollie whimpered.
"I'm so sorry. Is this a bad time?" Lynx gasped.
Brutus turned to her, "No... no. You have the right to know who Ericka was. Let me explain.
Ericka was Midas' wife. They loved each other very deeply. Then one day our rivaling Agency Shadow tricked her into joining them after saying Midas kills his colleagues when they get on his nerves. This was before Midas had his golden touch, by the way. He was known as 'Hugo Barnes'.
One day, us and Shadow were having a fight on the mainland when Midas told everyone to fall back and get out our snipers. Suddenly, Midas dropped his sniper and froze. He'd killed Ericka by accident. He was overcome with sadness and after we won the fight, Midas disappeared. There was no body. He was gone for two weeks, when he returned with-"
"The Golden Touch and immortality. And technically a missing eye." Midas shouted from across the room.
He was joined by two women and Meowscles. One had short brown hair and a red crop top. She looked very impatient. The other had spiky brown hair and a black tank top. She had face paint on that made her look like she had spread three lines of mud across her face. She surveyed the three of them with interest on her face. Meowscles looked derp.
"I also had an idea." he continued, "To turn Ericka into the intercom. She now technically runs this building. I was fulfilled. It was great."
"Course it was, boss." the crop topped woman groaned, "I'm TnTina by the way."
"I'm Maya. Next time you see me I'll probably look different." the woman with the spiky hair greeted, waving.
Lynx stared in awe. Maybe she could stay a little bit. She could tell people she was out at a friend's place on her phone. No biggie. These people really did care for her. And there were so many.
"The case files are ready Brutus... and friends I guess." Ericka announced.
The hologram table in the middle of the room zoomed in on a small building to the south east of Lazy Lake.
"The Box Factory?" Brutus shouted.
"Yup. There are about 7, 8-ish Shadow Henchmen there. They scared off the workers." Ericka bellowed.
"Lynx, you're going in. Skye will go with you for safety reasons." Midas explained.
"Aye aye, sir!" Skye giggled, "C'mon Lynx, lets go."
Skye and Lynx turned to leave. Skye exited through the door. Lynx looked back at her new friends and left.
