The Letter

I wasn't one to get nervous. Nerves were just a figment of your mind, which is what I believed - something you created out of your fear. It was what you twisted out of your situation - whether it was the big game that's coming up or the trouble you got in for doing something utterly stupid. But the latter generally happened to boys, in my opinion.

So when my fingers shook to open the letter on the counter, I thought I was shaking because I was cold. It wasn't a far-fetched idea, really. Summer, Winter, Spring, and Autumn were all freezing in our wonderful city, Evanescent.

I picked up the pristine manila envelope, my grimy nails ripping through the thin paper. Immediately, I pulled out the folded paper inside - the note that would determine everything.

I felt strong arms grasp my shoulders, and my dad assured me, "It's okay if you don't get in, Aura. Your brother didn't - there are many people in our city."

I hastily shrugged his arms off, rolling my eyes at the mention of my brother. Just because he didn't get drafted didn't mean I wouldn't.

Feeling free of distractions, I unfolded the note, my hands steady again. My ocean eyes quickly scanned it, my thin lips growing wider with each word. I almost squealed as I turned around, throwing my arms around my dad, who was much taller than me. "I got drafted!" I informed him, grinning widely.

But even when he tried for a smile, worry clouded his face. I didn't mimic his concern because I knew this was best. If I did this and won (which I would), I could win the prize.

The prize of a billion dollars.

Uh, yep that was short. Didn't mean for that to happen...
In the future, chapters will be longer as we get into the plot more! I hope you liked Aura as a character, cause I had fun writing her! Stay tuned for more...oh yeah I wrote this one. We both edited it. :)
