in reality, (l/n) (y/n) never thought someone could match her chaotic energy until she had met kuroo tetsurou in her first year. they were in class 1-5 together, a college prep class, and were seatmates. the first thing she learned about kuroo was that he was a massive fucking nerd. it was such a big whiplash for her when he pulled out "eicosapentaenoic acid" that she swore she still had neck pains from it to this day.

as a former tennis player that had one elbow injury too many to continue playing, (y/n) was glad to have the company of a volleyball player like kuroo to tell her about his sport. over time, (y/n) had learned to appreciate kuroo's presence and the additions of yaku and kai. from their first year, the four had learned four very important things.

one: kuroo and yaku will not agree on anything. yaku liked girls with short hair, so kuroo liked girls with long hair. (y/n) asked kai if she should go bald then, and he said it's better to stick with a hairstyle that's in the middle. the only thing they did agree on was that they would one day lead their team to nationals.

two: kai will not break apart any of yaku or kuroo's disagreements. that job was left to (y/n) so she could tell them they were being dumb. most of the time, she wasn't wrong. neither her or kai really cared which member of the electropop group "perfume" they liked better. (but in all honestly, it was neither yaku's nocchi or kuroo's kashiyuka -- it was kai and (y/n)'s favorite a-chan.)

three: none of them cared too much about honorifics. yaku preferred to be called by his last name as did kuroo, but both of them didn't really mind (y/n) calling them by their first names. she was rather shameless in doing so, but in turn said she preferred being called by her first name as well. kai just felt it was easier to say "kai" rather than "nobuyuki" for everyone. no one really disagreed.

four: they all loved volleyball. this was more obvious for the three boys, but (y/n) enjoyed watching their practices and sometimes pitching in to help for the sake of her friends. when the three of them would stay after to continue practicing beyond set hours, she would comment on their receiving stance and their serve form. turns out, it was not that far off from tennis. the ball was just bigger and there were no rackets.

when kuroo and (y/n) had met bokuto koutarou, it was at an annual training camp held for tokyo teams in their first year. it supposedly happened every year at shinzen high school because they had the best air conditioning and had enough space for multiple teams to stay overnight. (it was only a shame that shinzen high had so many bugs.)

(y/n) had tagged along for this training camp, just excited to have a fun sleepover with her friends. she had become a temporary manager to help the only other manager of the team, who was a nice second-year boy that loved volleyball but didn't have the physical prowess to play.

bokuto koutarou, as always, was a ball of energy. him and kuroo were extremely competitive, and (y/n) considered herself to have the amazing talent to blend into their competitive arguments to egg them on or tell them to shut up. either way, (y/n) had no qualms about telling bokuto, who had been nearly a stranger at the time, to shut up or get smacked. (in the end, kuroo laughed at her threat and he had been the one to get smacked instead. bokuto and (y/n) just high-fived each other.)

"that hurt, (y/n)!" kuroo whined.

"good! i hope it did!" (y/n) snapped.

"bwahaha! you got smacked by a girl!" bokuto laughed.
