FIRST, it was Bakugo. Most, if not all of Izuku's previous classmates were there, dressed in their pro-hero gear and ready to defend Japan. It was smooth sailing at first, taking out each villain until there was barely any left while Asui and Iida focused on rescuing any bystanders or hostages.

It was scary, but it was work.

Izuku remembered how he had sighed, wiping the sweat off his forehead before flicking air towards a building, the debris collapsing on another villain. Everything was fine. Everything was okay. Everyone wasn't injured. However, one misstep, one miscalculation, one mistake on their part cost everything.

Izuku remembered the feeling of his shoe hitting the gravel and how he had pivoted it just slightly before being slammed into the ground. His chest hit the ground, hard. He scrambled to get up, green eyes flitting about as he heard a faint yell and protests. His head tilted up as he finally got to his feet, watching his rival and childhood friend blast himself forward.

He screamed something that was far from coherent, but Izuku had enough of an idea of what it was by the smirk on Bakugo's features. Nobody saw the villain swing. Nobody saw the falling building. Nobody saw Bakugo nearing death. And that was the scariest part. It all happened in a minute; no, less than that.

Bakugo's explosions had suddenly faltered and a giant sound rocked the air, the ground underneath everyone's feet trembling as the building finally collapsed, pinning down the one and only Ground Zero. It was their first instinct to watch. Their second instinct was to scream. Then, to run.

It all happened so fast. Todoroki and Iida focused on taking down the villain while the others rushed to Bakugo's aid, scrambling to get rid of the rubble that had taken down their friend. And luckily, he was okay. He was bruised and broken and mangled, but alive. And that's all it took; the combined hope to see his chest rise and fall and the death of the villain that caused it.

Now, he was in the hospital. In intensive care, but alive. However, he didn't keep himself alive. His lungs didn't breathe on their own and if it wasn't for Kirishima's adamant protests, his life support probably wouldn't be on anymore.

Second, was Ochaco. Her parents had fallen into financial debt and it was hopeless. Pro-heroes barely got paid for what they did, so she opted out of it. How was he supposed to know that his friend was suffering? She had moved to the states soon after and last he heard, she was seeking a therapist and was hard at work in an office job.

One of the most recent was Todoroki.

The scandals had gone out and become full-blown. Now, they weren't completely about him. However, his dad was under incredible pressure. After years of secrets and keeping their mouth shut, the public had found out about Endeavor's domestic abuse. How? Like Hell anyone knew. Todoroki was pestered by the media and ordered to stay in his apartment.

He wasn't complaining. He liked the silence and knowing that he was the only one in his home. That was until the media ruined that too. Endeavor was nowhere to be found (probably told to go in hiding by his PR agency) and his other siblings were given similar orders. Todoroki had texted Midoriya two weeks ago, but that was it.

He informed him of his undergoing online therapy and how he was back on anti-depressants. He claimed that the media still pestered him outside of his window, but he was supposed to get security the day after.

It seemed nothing ever felt right.

The worst was with Izuku's fiancée, the woman that he'd grown to love and adore over the years. She had originally just started out as a simple assistant in his hero agency, but he'd the two had become attached to one another over the course of four years. After one year as working buddies, one and a half of being friends, and another one and a half as partners, he had felt ready.

He knew, as a pro-hero, he had many duties to attend to. Even if that meant leaving his wife-to-be in the middle of the night under the covers of their shared bed. Of course, it always broke his heart, knowing that she won't be happy to wake up and feel the space on his side rather than himself.

Still, he had duties to attend to.

So, almost every night, he would have to leave the love of his life behind and venture into the depths of dark streets filled with scheming villains. Their relationship stayed steady albeit the push and pull that came with the life of a pro-hero and his assistant. However, it seemed that the world always plotted against him.

It was one cough.

Then, it was blood.

The stakes escalated and it wasn't long before Izuku found himself rushing his fiancée to the same hospital that held Bakugo. He'd always known about her family history, but he'd never believed that it'd come true. With a father that had developed lung cancer and a grandfather with intense smoking habits, he had only hoped for the best.

Now, he was left to hold her hand and watch as the heart rate monitor monotonously beeped on. Heartbreaking, Izuku tensed as he clenched his love's hand tighter, watching as the doctor traipsed in with a solemn look. Midoriya bit the bottom of his lip, tears glazing over his green eyes as he walked out, glancing back briefly to watch the doctor check Y/n's vitals.

Unshed tears ruined his sight and he whimpered, tilting his head down. No matter how much he believed in his dream growing up and imagined the heroic notions that followed, he'd been forced to come to a stunning realization the past year.

No matter how much you do, no matter how much you try, and no matter how much you train; a pro-hero can never save everybody.
