So this is from a book called manga: the mega guide. And it's a really good book by Samantha Gorel.
Basically these 3 characters are there to show proportions. So the space between the black lines is one "head"
The character on the left is in the proportion 1:5 or 1 head to 5 heads (so the body is the same height as the head times 5)
The character in the middle is 1: 6 1/2 heads
The character on the right is in proportion 1:9 or 1 head to nine heads for the body
