When you woke with a jolt, it was dark out. Blinking up at the night sky, through the window, you hadn't even realized you'd fallen asleep. "Are we..."
"Almost there? Yep, we're just about to land," Alfred said, taking a big gulp of the soda he'd brought. "Get enough rest?" he said with a chuckle, starting to bring the plane down again.
You nodded, at least hoping you had rested enough. "Yeah," you mumble, shivering a little from laying against the cold window again.
"Hey, is that really the only coat you have?" Alfred asked motioning to your jean jacket and sweatshirt you'd put under it. When you nod, he seems aghast. "Well why didn't you say so?" he said, bringing the plane down. A little snow was sticking to the windshield of the plane, but it was still only a gentle snowfall. It was quite pretty, really.
You were about to tell Alfred thanks and simply leave with your small amount of supplies, but he promptly stopped you and placed something in your hand.
His own jacket, a pilot's bomber jacket. It was thick and warm, soft fur-like fabric lining the neck. He'd worn it every time you'd seen him. "A-Alfred, you don't have to," you say, trying to hand the jacket back to him. But the pilot insisted, turning you around and pulling your arms into the sleeves. It smelled like oil, like the plane itself. But it was incredibly warm and comforting, the most of each you'd felt since you'd lost Matt.
Beaming, you threw your arms around your new friend and thanked him dearly for going out of his way to help you. "I don't know how I'll ever repay you," you said, looking up at the tall pilot.
"Ah, don't worry about it. I'm all about doing good deeds!" he said with a wink, patting you on the shoulder. "Besides, you need it way more than me. I'll be alright in here."
"Well... you were definitely my hero, Alfred. Thank you so much," you said one more time, throwing your bag on your back and picking up your bow and arrows. The pilot beamed proudly, seeming to mull over the idea of being a hero in his head.
He helped you out of the plane, leaning down to give you a little wave. "Best of luck to you, [Name]. Don't let that asshole catch you, stay strong!" he instructed, giving you a confident grin. "Say whats up to your uncle for me! A-And... stay safe, okay?"
You grin back, nodding in return before hesitantly turning to face the town.
You'd taken several steps away from the plane as he started pulling away to take off yet again. Looking up in the dark sky at the lights on the wings as Alfred found altitude, you smiled thoughtfully. You hoped he wasn't lonely. But you knew in a way he wasn't and never would be, so long as he had his plane, his deliveries to make and the beautiful landscape beneath him. You'd never forget his kindness, and you'd be sure to tell Matt what he did for you so just maybe you'd get to repay him one day.
A chilling breeze blew, ruffling you a little. Letting out a breath, you pulled the bomber jacket closer around your ears and pulled your sweatshirt hood onto your head for some protection. You kept one hand gripping your bow close, the other stuffed in the pocket of Alfred's jacket. It was a relief to see the few lights of Chesterfield Inlet and the sign welcoming you there.
As you walked through town, you noticed how oddly quiet it was. Besides the few dim street lamps, there was no other light. Not a single house had light coming from the windows, and the only sound you could hear was that of your feet crunching on the tundra and your own breathing. Even the snow was utterly soundless. Shivering, not from cold but from the eeriness, you hastened your steps and set off down the well-driven road to Matt's house.
You pondered as you walked, glad to have the chilly breeze at your back. What if Matt wasn't there? what if Allen was? You couldn't imagine what he'd do to you if he found you... You'd made him come to far, run too long, made him chase you like you were his prey and him a starving dog.
He'd never let you be free, not like Matt did. He'd poach you until he could mount you on his wall and laugh in Matt's face. Worst of all, you knew why he wanted to keep you under his thumb, and it didn't really make you mad.
It just made you sad for Allen. He probably never would have ended up like this, but you couldn't blame Matt for what happened between them.
Looking up from your feet and the tundra, you found yourself in front of Matt's familiar cabin. At first you smiled, but it quickly fell. Your heart dropped into your stomach when you saw the front door was wide open, creaking a little as it opened and closed slightly in the breeze.
He couldn't be here...
You step up to the open doorway, peering inside with wide, worried eyes. "... Matt?" you say, your voice echoing over the tundra a little. But there is no reply, no sound or movement.
Going inside, you gulp down your tears and nerves. Peeking into the kitchen, it looks like some things have been moved since you were last here, but that could have been caused by any number of things. The bedroom was empty, the bed Matt had let you sleep in made and undisturbed from what you could tell. Kuma's bed was empty except for a mangled chew toy of sorts, not to mention copious amounts of his fur.
The living room was undisturbed as well, other than an empty mug sitting beside Matt's chair. Had he really left it there? You couldn't guess.
You dropped your bag and bow just inside, stepping out the front door again and staring across the dark tundra. Now your tears couldn't be stopped, your lip quivering from cold and your failing composure.
You wailed and wailed into the crisp, snowy night. You cried out in anguish, disbelief. You wanted the world to feel how broken your heart was right now. But out here, no one could hear your cries, not here where the tundra ran long and the people roamed sparser than you'd grown up knowing.
"MATT!" you shouted into the void you'd walked yourself into. "PLEASE, WHERE ARE YOU?! I'M HERE! I'M HERE!" you screamed, feeling your tears becoming cold streams down your face.
You fell to your knees, the snow and frozen tundra earth beneath you crunching crisply. You sobbed and tried wiping your tears away the best you could with the sleeve of Alfred's jacket. You missed Matt, Kuma, Regina, your parents, Alfred, Josh, your friends... and despite having such wonderful people like them in your life, you always ended up alone like this.
Alone, cold, lost.
The snow was settling silently on your head as you sniffled, your hands balled into fists against the frozen ground. Many thoughts crossed your mind; thoughts of powering on, thoughts of finding some way to end all this. Was it even worth fighting through insane family, being uprooted over and over, death and loss?
You thought about the gun in the pocket of your jean jacket, feeling its shape suddenly against your side. You'd nearly forgotten it was there. Allen's gun...
Realizing you'd never felt this alone and helpless, you teared up even more. Without Matt or the others you considered part of your family, you were useless. And when you thought of how you treated your parents, how you used to treat Matt, you realized that perhaps you'd always been useless. Other than the fact that you'd given them reasons to hate you.
You began reaching into your jacket, having unzipped Alfred's bomber jacket. There wasn't any reason to go on... even if Allen did find you, you'd likely end up dead anyway.
Suddenly you heard a noise, the first you'd heard besides your own footsteps. Daring not to look at whoever or whatever was approaching, you shout, "G-Go away!" Regretfully, your voice shook with emotion. "Leav-ve me alone!"
There was a long pause, your sobs returning and causing you to cover your face with your hands. But you jolted upright when you heard a deep, familiar voice.
