Ok welcome, this is the rewrite of my other story and I really intend to make it more interesting than the last one— ya know so more people actually keep reading maybe. Have fun!

Living in the debt of your childhood friend with no say for the rules in the game is hard, but why can't he just let you go?

Eight years ago:

Inconceivably enough, the pair of them were children. Where fields of tall grass with straw like texture lies a jungle for discovery, to a kid, that is. However, with that developing brain all young people have comes with numerous backfires; naivety, a false sense of security, of safety.

And so, that's what let the man slip in, a knife in his chubby hand that would slice the hands of a boy and girl (childhood romance at best!) apart. They had vows, yet it was very unlikely for the promises to be seen through, memories lost in fields of tall grass.

He chuckled lightly to himself, a good pair, unsupervised, I mean what could a man like him do? Many things that would happen should the seven year olds fall into his grasp.

He inhaled a sharp intake of breath, a certain smell of onion rings lingering behind—perhaps unaware one of the children could sense his presence.

"Y/N! Let's go into town and get some ice cream!" The girl yawned. She couldn't help but find this boy... unamusing — yet she'd been practically forced out with his constant begging for her time.

"Sure..."

He felt her annoyance radiant and frowned slightly, a pout leaving wrinkles on his adorable features. He vowed to put a stop her boredom! And the pest that was making their time together horrible.

He took her hand in stride, pulling her quite forcibly to the more rural street than the already empty scenery. Not a soul liked to be seen hanging around because of its putrid smell and reputation.

"Hardin!" She whined, clawing at the vice grip. "Why are we going this way it stinkksss!" She held her nose with her free hand.

He paused for a moment, before thoughtfully replying. "It's... safe. You'll be safe here with me." His eyes were darkened and there was a particular malice gleaming off of him like a blood stream. A shiver ran down her spine. Though she wanted to protest, she remained quiet out of fear, letting the source of it continue to drag her further into the alley.

It was easy, wasn't it? Too easy. It was only a little boy, third his size at best... so why... why was he the slightest bit afraid? He gulped, his eyes set ahead. It began to rain.

"Y/N, wait here a sec. I'll be right back okay?" The boy had the largest grin on his face, patting the stunned girl's head. The man groaned to himself. Children were gross. And weird.

Still, he thought. He left the girl, it'll be more reassuring whilst he's gone.

He approached slowly at first, tip toes like the faint rain plummeting onto the pavement, before a wave of panic overtook him and he lunged forward, baring the knife as he screamed, she screamed, he got closer and closer and closer until he was within range to strike—

Thud.

He slumped onto the ground, a large crater dented into the back of his head. His blood made spirals on the rain soaked ground as the girl whimpered, screamed, covering her eyes and mouth with her thin fingers.

He was dead.

Yet she only heard a sigh.

"...Hardin?"

"It's alright Y/N." His hands were bloody. "You're safe, Y/N." He was grinning. "You're only safe with me protecting you." His eyes were crazy.

But... she didn't pull away. Quite the opposite, she pulled him into a hug, crying into his chest. She flinched in conflict. Hardin was the same boy he'd always been; the one who'd always (tried) to make her laugh; the one who scared the bad things away! Beat them til they bled!

"Hardin.." her breathing was raspy. "Hardin, you saved me!" Hardin grinned as she softly smiled. He'd been waiting for such genuineness for years! That real smile and not that pained, bore one he'd been cursed with! Finally, he was enough! ...And all he had to do was kill the people who tried to touch her?

A pang twinged in him when he heard the sirens coming. They're interrupting my well earned time— An ambulance pulled up and the two watched as some professional looking people pried the broken figure off the ground. It was partially stuck due to the blood and the rain.

"I'm Officer Pedro, could you tell us a brief... well yeah, what happened?" Hardin couldn't help but think this guy was a complete idiot.

So, cue the heartfelt speech: "I swear officer, he was charging at her! I didn't know what to do! Please, please... you gotta believe me, he was tryna kill us! Then I saw this guy, who bashed in his head as we watched! He ran when he heard the sirens and I kept hugging Y/N to protect her!"

"... We can confirm that, son. Good for saying still. That man was trying to sell you for... well, you don't wanna know, kid." The officer scratched his moustache as Hardin grimaced. A foul smell of Diet Coke mixed with sardines angered his nose.

"C'mon, I'll send you and the girl home with you."

His eyes fluttered with desire. "Home with... Y/N? My home with Y/N..."

The officer felt nauseous listening to the boy, so merely patted him on the head mumbling, "Sure kid, Sure, let's get you go home with Y/N."

He ushered the kids into the vehicle and shut the door.

"Hardin?" His grip on her hands tightened.

"Yes?"

"Why did you lie? There was no other guy."

Hardin felt a wave of anger, digging his finger nails into her skin. She yelped.

"I... I did it to protect you! Y/N, you don't understand... HE WAS TRYING TO KILL YOU."

Tears welled in her eyes.

"Hardin...."

He whispered, plastering a seductive smile on his face. "You owe me."

"I owe you... so much." He flushed at her words, pulling her into a hug.

"I know a way you can pay me back."

He stroked her hair, while she trembled in fear. God, if anyone were to interpret how happy he was at the moment—

"And it's easy."

"What?"

"Just stay by my side."

And.

That's.

What.

She.

Did.
