Charlie's Fun Friends

It was a sunny day on the Island of Sodor. The engines were working hard with passengers and cargo and were enjoying the sunlight bouncing on their boilers.

(Percy can be seen collecting the mail and Toby and Henrietta are collecting passengers including the grumpy passenger at Knapford Station.)

Charlie loves this busy time of year more than any engine. With more engines doing work, the more friends he had to have fun with on his jobs. But sometimes this can get him into trouble and cause confusion and delay, not just for him but for his friends too.

On this day, Charlie was at the shunting yards. The Fat Controller arrived to see him.

"Charlie, today I want you to shunt the coaches for the Express and then I want you to help Thomas deliver metal pilings to the harbour." he said.

"Yes sir." cheered Charlie. He liked working with Thomas. Thomas was one of Charlie's best and most fun friends.

After shunting the coaches for the Express, Charlie rushed to meet Thomas at the foundry. He was looking forward to having fun with him there and on their journey to the harbour.

Charlie soon arrived at the foundry. Thomas was already coupled up to his train load of metal pilings.

Paxton, 'Arry and Bert were shunting the flatbeds of pilings into place.

"Oh no." groaned 'Arry.

"There are two silly Steamies." moaned Bert.

Paxton, Thomas and Charlie ignored them.

"Hello, Charlie." said Thomas.

"Have fun on your job." said Paxton cheerfully.

('Arry and Bert roll their eyes, then start coughing.)

"So dusty around here!" grumbled 'Arry.

"Stuck in my mouth." mumbled Bert.

"Hey, 'Arry and Bert." said Charlie, "What happens if you eat Christmas decorations?"

The diesels were surprised. "Don't know." they muttered.

"You get tinselitus!" answered Charlie.

Charlie, Thomas and Paxton laughed, and even 'Arry and Bert smiled lightly but were too proud to admit to it.

"Let's go, Charlie!" whistled Thomas, and he pulled away.

Paxton shunted Charlie's load of pilings behind him and Charlie whistled.

"Thanks, Paxton, see you later!" called Charlie as he rushed after Thomas. He wanted to have fun with him on the way to the harbour.

(Paxton watches them go, still chuckling lightly.)

Charlie caught up with Thomas. Thomas was happy to be working with his fun friend too. They were both feeling hyper.

"Thomas, let's race to the harbour!" suggested charlie excitedly.

"You're on, Charlie!" said Thomas, and they raced happily along the line to the harbour.

Thomas and Charlie sped across the fenlands and the Sodor Bridge. Charlie loved racing around Sodor with Thomas.

"I'll win!" he cheered.

"No, I will." called Thomas.

Charlie and Thomas sped by the Docks. But Charlie nearly crashed into a flatbed of wood that Cranky was lowering planks onto. He had to stop and Thomas took the lead.

"You should have watched where you were going, Charlie." snapped Cranky.

"Could you lift this flatbed out of the way, Cranky?" asked Charlie cheekily, "You could show me how strong you are!"

"No!" barked Cranky, "The last time I was challenged to a test of strength, I broke my arm! You'll have to change to the outside line!"

Charlie had no choice. He switched to the outside track and as he sped away again he called out, "You know what, Cranky? You're just no fun!"

Charie sped on his way in pursuit of Thomas. He hoped he could still catch up and win the race. But the metal pilings were heavy on his flatbed and his emergency stop at the Docks was very close. And now he was gong faster than before.

Thomas had just arrived at the harbour. He had slowed down coming in, so that he didn't pass the Danger sign up ahead at the quay.

But then there was trouble.

Charlie rushed in. "Oh no. Too late!" he cried.

He put his brakes on but his flatbeds of metal pilings were pushing him forward.

"WOOOAH!" he yelled an he whizzed past Thomas.

"Look out, Charlie!" yelled Thomas. But it was too late.

Charlie was pushed past the board and he smashed through the buffers and he splashed into the sea. Luckily, no one was hurt, the tide was low and Charlie's brakes prevented the flatbeds derailing and the pilings being lost to the sea.

"Charlie!" cried Thomas. He buffered up to Charlie's brakevan and pulled.

With a lot of effort, Thomas pulled Charlie clear of the water and onto the tracks. charlie wasn't having fun anymore. His boiler was covered in seaweed, he smelled horribly and he was damaged at the front buffers from hitting the quay bottom.

The Fat Controller arrived.

"What has happened here?" he thundered.

"I'm sorry, sir." said Charlie dismally, "I was just trying to have fun."

"Fun has a time and place, Charlie." said the Fat Controller, "And delivering heavy loads is certainly not one of those times and a dangerous place like the harbour is not one of those places."

"Yes, sir. Sorry, sir." said Charlie.

Charlie learned his lesson. After he was repaired, Charlie and Thomas enjoyed a washdown.

"Now this is fun!" said Charlie.

"And safe!" added Thomas.

That evening, Charlie and Thomas passed through the Docks. Cranky was still working unloading a fishing boat for Edward.

"You two again?" said Cranky crankily.

"Um, I'm sorry I was rude to you before, Cranky." said Charlie, "I hope you can forgive me."

Cranky was grumpy but he could see Charlie was sorry. "I'll let you off this once."

"Thanks, Cranky." smiled Charlie, "Oh, what part of a fish weighs the most?"

"Don't know." said the engines.

"The scales!" he answered.

Thomas, Edward and Charlie laughed. And even Cranky grinned!

(The End!)
