DILYN CAGLE HAS ALWAYS HAD EVERYTHING.

Decades before Dawsyn Cagle turns the city of Seattle into a blazing supernova, her eldest — and only — sibling is born. A sister, Dilyn: a single tuft of auburn hair on her head, a crescent-shaped dent between her irises, a silver spoon in her mouth.

(These, her mother tells her, are like flowers. They are things that will grow as you do.)

And grow, she does; Dilyn ages with ease, with a precise sense of human nuclearity, just the way that she's been wired at her root to do. For years, she lies awake and feels her bones stretch and expand beneath porcelain skin, her veins funnel blood to each vital organ; each morning, she passes by the mirror and studies her manicured reflection, watching a fresh pool of freckles begin to conglomerate across the bridge of her nose and wondering what she will make with them. What she will make of herself.

At five years old, a medical miracle graces her sightline for the first time; at ten, she's brave enough to reach out and touch it. To bury it deep in her heart, to hold it and love it until it becomes a part of her being. In the springtime, when the trees begin to change and the flowers unfurl their buds, she thinks of her mother's prophecy; everything is bigger when it blooms. Herself, her love, and her longing. At eighteen, Dilyn graduates as valedictorian from the best STEM-focused high school in the northwest; at twenty-two, the salutatorian of New York University's esteemed Pre-Medical program. With the first changing of leaves comes an acceptance letter, four more years in the Big Apple at the NYU School of Medicine, and a whole new garden of saplings: a stellar grade point average, a coveted spot in Mount Sinai's post-graduate neurosurgery internship program, and a steamy summer fling with their most notable Plastic Surgeon in residence.
