Jade Quill

1 hour. What would you do with the last hour of your free life? Most would write a will or something like that. But I had different plans. I walked into the living room where Stark, Bucky, Banner and Sam sat on the couch watching a movie.

I had to be heartless about this. "Where's Rogers?" Tony glances at me "Thought you two were fighting?" I cross my arms "If we were fighting he'd be dead. Where is he?" Bucky pointed down the hall. "He's in his room." I nod, turning and walking down the hall.

When I reached his door I heard music playing. Like stuff they play in old fashion diners. In other words 40's music. I lightly knock on the door. When he opens the door he looked surprised to see me. "Uh? Hey." I smile softly "Hey. Can I talk to you for a minute?"

Rogers nods, opening the door wider "Sure." I walk in and sit on his couch. Yes. All the rooms had couches here. He sat in a reading chair across from me. I sighed, twiddling my thumbs "I'm sorry Rogers."

Rogers nearly fell out of the chair. "You're what?" I fold my hands "I'm not repeating myself." Rogers puts his elbows on his knees, very attractively might I add, and asks "What for exactly?"

I push my hair out of my face and reply "Everything. For trying to kill you, hanging you from the ceiling, for being a bitch. To you in particular." Rogers shakes his head "You don't need apologize-" I cut him off "Don't you dare say I've done nothing wrong! I have!"

Rogers runs a hand through his hair "Jade, I know you've had a horrible past. But you need to stop living in it. There's no changing your past. But how you live now will effect the future." I smile sadly "I know. Trust me I know. But I have a question."

Rogers smiles softly, it made my heart ache. In less than an hour now I won't ever see that beautiful smile again. "Shoot." I watch him closely "There's this sacrifice that has to be made, one that will save millions. And you're the only one who can. But you're leaving behind the only friends you ever had. The only people you care about. What do you do?"

Rogers leaned back in his chair "I made that sacrifice to end the war. I left behind my friends. Bucky, Howard, the Commandos...." he trailed off, not being able to finish his sentence. I clear my throat "Agent Carter?" Rogers nods, rubbing his face "Yeah. Peggy."

I felt jealous of this woman but I knew what she had done for our country. "I think I've finally gotten over her though." I was surprised at Rogers words. I furrow my eyebrows "You have?"

Rogers nods, looking me straight in the eyes. "I think I found the right partner." My eyes widen completely as I realize what he meant. I stand up, shaking my head "No! No, no, no!"

Rogers stands up as well as I continue "No! I'm not what you need! I can't even dance!" Rogers places a hand on my hip and uses the other to brush my hair away from my face, causing my words to flow more frequently "I'm not what you deserve. I am hostile and you're a gentleman. You're an amazing hero and I'm an assassin. I don't deserve someone like you-" He cuts me off by pressing his lips to mine. My words died in my throat as my hands rested on his chest.

He was a lot taller than me, 6'3 maybe. While I stood at 5'6. His large hands lifted me so I stood on the coffee table, evening us out a bit. Steve pulled away slightly, just enough so he could speak "That was the biggest pile of BS I've ever heard."

I chuckle, stroking his soft hair I've wanted to play with for so long. "Well, I should do it more often then." Steve nods, closing the distance between us once again. Our tongues wrestled and our hands strayed slightly. We eventually ended up just laying on his bed, my head on his chest and our legs tangled together.

Steve played with my hair and I traced shapes on his shirt. I wish I could stay like this forever. But I barely had any time left before I received the message. I looked up at Steve and just soaked him in.

His mere touch sent me into overdrive. Steve kissed my forehead and I smiled in pure bliss. I buried my face in his neck and his arms wrapped around my body. "You have no idea how long I've wanted this." Steves words left guilt in my chest. I placed a kiss on his jaw "I-I know how you feel."

My phone went off and I knew what it was. I sat up and shoved it in my pocket with shaking hands. "What's wrong?" Steve questions worriedly. He knew something wasn't right.

I took notice of his shield right next to the bed as I shook my head. "Nothing's wrong." I heard his amused chuckle behind me "You're lying Jade." I hear the text notification again. A tear leaked down my face as I turned to Steve.

He quickly wiped it away "Please tell me." I breathed in deeply "I-I am so sorry Steve. But it no one can stop me. I'm cleaning my ledger." Steve's eyes widen "You aren't doing what I think you're doing?" I blink the tears away "I'm sorry. But this is gonna hurt." I lift his shield and hit him in the head with it. Knocking him unconscious.

I drop the shield and look at him one last time. "I'm so sorry." I check my phone and sneak out to the elevator. No one saw me. Good. The elevator stopped a few floors below where The Avengers hung out. A woman with orange/blonde hair got in sharply dressed with a tablet folded in her arms came into the elevator.

She smiled at me "You going to the lobby?" I nod. "Yeah." She pressed the lobby button and the elevator began moving again. "You're Jade Quill right?" The woman questioned. I nodded "Yeah. That's me." She holds her hand out "Pepper Potts." I shake her hand. "Ah. So you're Starks girlfriend I've heard so much about."

Pepper smiles "That's me." I knew how much of an impact she made on Tony's life. "He needs you Pepper. Don't ever forget that." Pepper smiles "I know. He may not be the most humble guy out there but he has a big heart."

I nod, and of course Tony's stupid J.A.R.V.I.S had to butt in. "Miss Quill shall I begin the Clean Ledger protocol?" I smack my forehead "What part of secrecy don't you understand J.A.R.V.I.S. No! Not until I'm at least at the rendezvous point."

J.A.R.V.I.S questioned me "Are you sure you want to go through with this ma'am?" I replied uneasily as Pepper tried to figure out what was going on. "It's the only way. I can't risk them screwing up this whole operation."

Pepper furrows her eyebrows "What's the Clean Ledger protocol?" I shake me head "Its nothing of importance. Just a mission." But Pepper read me like a book. "It's your last one isn't it?"

I choked on air "How did you know that?" Pepper replied "I am just good at reading emotions since Tony wasn't one to verbally share. I had to learn how to read him." My eyes widen "Please don't try and talk me out of it. The aftermath would be catastrophic."

Pepper shakes her head "I won't. Just remember that you're leaving behind a lot of people who care about you. One in particular." The elevator door slides open and I step out. "About that, you might want to check on Captain Rogers. He may or may not have been hit in the head with a shield." With that, I run out of the building and towards my pain filled future.
