"Mom I will be fine." I say to my mom throwing a water bottle into my bag, "We live 10 minutes from the school.. I can walk by myself."
"Kristen this is your last year of high school.. I just want to take you like I have every first day of school." my mom exclaims while handing me my lunch bag.
So yes my mom has taken me to school everyday since my 1st year of kindergarten.. but I'm going to be 18 in just a few months I have to start being more independent and quit relying on her for a ride everywhere I go, especially since I am in walking distance now.
"I'll be fine mom. I'll go straight to the office like I was planning and let them know I'm the new student from out of state and they'll take care of it from there." I say looking at my mom who has tears in her eyes. "Why are you about to cry?" I ask making a face.
"I'm sorry. Its just you're my last baby and you're graduating soon, I'm so old." She says with her hands covering her face and letting out a sob, "I wish you weren't so grown up now."
I stare at her. She is literally crying because I am starting senior year.. oh my gosh.
"Well if you don't want me to go, I can always just drop out and stay home." I say sarcastically.
"No Kristen! You're going to school. It just upsets me how all my babies are grown up." My mom presumes wiping her face, "Have you talked to your sister or brother? They did not answer my call this morning." She asks me.
"No they don't answer my calls. But whats new Mom. Anyway I have to go, I'll see you later." I say walking toward the door.
"Have a great day and make some friends! Love you." My mom yells before I shut the door behind me.
"I won't." I mumble under my breath and continue to walk to my new school.
Holbroke High School. I looked up reviews on this school while at the airport a few weeks ago and honestly not so great.. Many parents saying how they're kids skip school and the administration does not even notice. Although that could come in to play for me because I doubt I will ever show up.
I get to the parking lot of the school and see many students out in the parking lot and teachers guiding freshman and parents inside the doors.
I cannot believe I have to start a new school my senior year of highschool.

I walk into the front doors and its so loud. People are everywhere. Its a pretty big school, a lot bigger than my previous school back home. So many students talking, laughing and hugging each other saying how much they missed one another.. nothing but new faces to me and I don't feel welcomed at all.
I see the sign that says 'Administrative office' and start my way to the door.
"My baby is a freshman and I need to know if he will be okay!" I walk in the door and hear a mother yelling at the lady at the front desk.. and the lady does not look amused at all.
She takes her glasses off and lays them beside her computer and says
"Ma'am your son will be just fine. Now have a good day." She says to the mother. The mother huffs and walks off.
Man if my mom were to make a scene like that I would never show my face again.
"Can I help you?"
I look up to see the front desk lady staring at me chewing her gum.
"Um yeah. I'm a new student and I was told to come to the front office on my first day." I say walking up to her desk.
"Name?" the lady asks looking at her computer.
"Kristen Dobreva." I say pushing my hair off my shoulder.
The lady looks at the computer and smiles "Oh you're the student who has came all the way from South Carolina! Well welcome to Holbroke High. Let me get your schedule printed off and I will have someone show you around the school, mkay?" She says standing up and walking to the printer. "How do you like Colorado so far? I'm from Washington and moved out here many many years ago and I have to say, I love it here." She says walking back over to me.
"Yeah its nice. Just ready to graduate." I exclaim
She laughs. "It will be here before you know it so enjoy it while you can. Now here is your schedule and let me get you a student to show you around. My name is Ms. Janice by the way." She says handing me my schedule.
I take it and look at it. English 12 is my 1st period.. great.
"Um no its fine.. I should be able to find my way around." I say brushing off her offer.
Janice looks at me for a moment before she smiles. "Well whatever you prefer.. but smile sweetheart its not that bad."
I give her a fake grin and walk out the door.
I look at my schedule while I'm walking and I'm honestly not thrilled by these classes.
English 12, Spanish 2, Algebra 4, and Financing.
What a fun first semester.
Finally after 10 minutes of walking I find my first period and walk through the door. People are laughing and joking and I walk myself to an empty seat at the back of the room, not making eye contact with anyone.
I hope today goes by as quickly as possible.
