The next morning, I get up and decide to go back to the forest, knowing Brantley won’t sleep there, only by the lake. His precious supplies mean more to him than me dying. But hey, I’m not complaining.

“WAYNE!” I hear a young girl’s shout. It’s not me, and the only younger girl than me that’s in here is…Sasha! I sprint towards her screaming, ending deep in the forest.

Sasha is stuck in a net dangling by a tree, and her supplies are on the forest floor, so she can’t get a knife and free herself. “Wayne! Help!” Sasha screams.

I rush over and take a knife and cut the top of the net. Just as I’m almost done with the net, Sasha screams, “MEGAN DUCK!” I duck and watch as the arrow hits her lung. I know only Zoe has the bow and arrow, so I know she knows I’m here, and it looks like I’ll have to run from here before she tells Brantley.

I cut the net, and put Sasha on the ground. Wayne comes and drops the wood he was holding–perhaps he was going to make a fire. He kneels next to Sasha and pulls the arrow out gently, but I see her wince. Wayne holds her hand as the blood pours from her punctured lung, as she gasps for air.

As a death wish, she smiles and whispers, “Thank you.” Then the cannon goes off, and Sasha is dead. Little 13-year-old Sasha is dead.

“Sorry I forgot about the alliance. I didn’t see you after I got stuff, so I figured Brantley got you or something.” Wayne apologizes, looking at Sasha’s pale face. “Allies, again?”

“Sure.” I say.

“You took nothing?” Wayne says. Wayne picks up Sasha’s supplies and we sort out everything between him and Sasha.

“Here.” I say, taking off my jacket, and showing him what I made, plus throwing the three canteens of water and blowdart tube on the ground. “I made a fire on the second day so I could get water from the lake without getting killed by the Careers.”

“Smart move.” Wayne says. I put the jacket back on and I split the last of thebread, and we eat it.

“I got these as a sponsor gift. One was for me and the other was for Sasha, but you can have them.” Wayne says, handing me sunglasses.

“No way! Sunglasses, neat!” I say, putting them on. I look up at the sun, and I’m blinded. “OW! Ugh, these didn’t work at all!” I throw the sunglasses at a tree and rub at my eyes, trying to get them to work.

“Well, they’re night vision.” Wayne says.

“What?” I ask.

“Night vision!” Wayne says, and I open my eyes.

“Oh, so I need them. I’ll go get them. Sorry!” I say, and get the night-vision glasses and put them in an empty slot I made.

“So what stuff did you take?” I ask Wayne as we’re walking.

“I took a backpack and a machete from Bloodbath.” Wayne replies. “You?”

“A backpack, the loaf of bread, a plastic container, and two packs of knives.” I say. “In the backpack, I found rope, blowdarts and the tube, matches, iodine, and these socks I’m using as gloves.” I put my hands in the air to show Wayne, and he nods.

“Did the Careers think you started the fire?” Wayne asks.

“When I heard them coming back, I dove into the bushes and hid there for a while. Brantley was literally fuming, and Zoe–” I say, but get cut off by Wayne.

“Which one is Zoe?” Wayne asks.

“The girl from 2. She used the bow and arrow, and shot my hand in Bloodbath.” I explain. “Anyways, Zoe talked to the Careers, except for Brantley and Starr, who went in the tent. They logically figured out who set the fire. Firstthey said who was left, and figured first it was Carter, the boy from 9. Then they realized his district is grain, so they narrowed it down to Wendell, Tyler, or Elliott, since the rest of us are from food districts.”
