We live in an age of modernization where we prefer everything western from food to clothing, music to lifestyle. India is a country known for its rich culture and diversity and it would be a great pity if it gets lost. Each one of us can take small steps to ensure its preservation. One such step is the use of earthen lamps.

"Earthen lamps or diyas are small lamps made of clay that are lit on Diwali. A cotton wick is used to light and ghee or oil is used as the fuel. Lighting a diya signifies getting rid of selfish thoughts and moving out from the dark towards the light."

Diwali, the festival of lights, is also known as 'deepotsav' which translates to 'festival of diyas' and yet instead of earthen lamps, Chinese fairy lights are used in most houses.

While all the other alternatives such as electric lamps, string lights, and candles have downsides, earthen lamps or diyas are by far the most environment and cost friendly decorations for Diwali.

Lamps and string lights require electricity and candles produce fumes on burning which can sometimes be harmful.

By using earthen lamps you'll be saving money and supporting local artisans at the same time. These incredibly skilled artisans wait the entire year just for this particular day and we go for either electric lamps or Chinese string lights. Not only that, despite the prices already being very less, we still bargain.

With earthen lamps, you also need cotton wicks. If you buy diyas, you are supporting both diya vendors and the wick makers. You'll be lighting both your's and their homes.

In a way, you are also keeping the traditional alive as diyas were initially used instead of string lights and lamps. Burning diyas has certain health benefits too, for example the ghee or mustard oil used purifies the air when the lamp is burnt.

We Indians always talk about being proud of our rich culture, then go on neglecting it. So this Diwali let's stay traditional. Use diyas and wear our traditional clothing.

A very happy and safe Diwali to you and your family.
