"Now, why would you want to go into the city?"

"Mama, I just want to try. I want to see what it's like living on my own."

"Evan, the city isn't a good suit for you. It's loud, and crowded and your allergies might get the best of you and we'll be too far away to help and-"

"Mama!"

I walk over and grab her hands quietly. The wrinkles around her brow seem permanent, but I rub them away.

"Mama, I'll be fine."

"...I know. I just don't want to see you not come home."

"I swear, I'll come home if it comes to that. If I can't hold my own in the city, I'll come back like you and Papa want me to. I'll even learn the trade."

Papa looks up from the papers upon hearing me say that.

"Oh really?"

"Y-yes."

Mama sighs and waves to the head maid.

"Yes, ma'am?"

"Pack a bag of clothes and other necessities we bring on vacations. Then bring them downstairs."

"Yes, ma'am."

I wrap her into a hug.

"Thank you."
