your face stayed tilted towards the floor, feeling much more comfortable staring at your twiddling fingers than the stares from across the room. you shifted your body weight on your hips, slightly rocking back and forth at the silence that filled the space.
you'd awoken from vinnie shaking you lightly, explaining that maddy and jordan were here, that you'd slept for a few hours, and that she really wanted to talk to you. you hadn't even thought of where she'd gone before you left the party, and you suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of guilt surround you. what if she hadn't been okay, and you'd just left without checking on her? how shitty of a friend would she think you were? you knew you couldn't lose her friendship but you weren't sure how--
"y/n?" vinnie's voice broke you out of your thoughts, and you pulled the flannel tighter around your body at the small chill in the room. "you ready for maddy to come in?" you nodded at his words and he smiled gently at you, his eyes softening at the obvious anxiety radiating from you. "hey," he picked your chin up with his thumb, directing you to meet his gaze, "you don't have to tell anyone, anything, babe. you do what you're comfortable with, and only what you're comfortable with. we have options, and she just wants to go through them." he placed his hand on your knee, rubbing fingers over the skin in attempts to stop your shaking.
"i know," you whispered, leaning into the touch on your jaw. "do you think she's mad at me?" your voice was quieter than vinnie had ever heard it, and his hand became tense around your knee, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"mad at you?" you nodded at his words, your anxiety expanding at the thought of him not agreeing with you. "y/n," he spoke softly, shifting closer to you on the cushion, "why in the world would she be mad at you?" his eyes were kind and welcoming, and you saw no trace of any malice or mockery in them.
"i just--" you looked down, not able to hold vinnie's gaze any longer, "i left without checking in with her..." you trailed off. "that's what we do at parties, you know? girls looking out for girls." the look on your boyfriend's face was enough to start the bubbling thoughts in your mind, wondering why he looked so upset. "i'm-- i'm sorry, vin-- i didn't, didn't mean to make you mad, at all, even--"
"hey," he said, once again lifting his hand to guide your jaw to face him. "look at me." you lifted your eyes to meet and found your brain still scrambling for the words he was about to say. "i'm not mad at you, babe, and neither is maddy, or jordan, or anyone else who might've been there." he exhaled a deep breath and tucked a piece of loose hair behind your ear. "there is no reason for her, or anyone, to be upset with you, at all. d'you hear me? absolutely no reason to be mad at you, for anything. you've done nothing wrong, love." your mind allowed you to breathe again at his words, and you nodded.
"okay," you breathed, squeezing the hand that sat atop your knee, letting him know you were ready to talk.
he'd then went to get maddy and jordan, which brought you to where you were now, sitting across from two people who were too afraid to break the silence, waiting for someone to ask the question and break the elephant in the room.
